coughing When Bentley was 10 weeks or so he had his bordetella vaccine. A week later he started coughing. Brought him back to the vet and he was given amoxicillin. We have used all that yet he still coughs. It is mostly at night now though. It seems productive but I'm not sure. He has another appt this Thursday and I'm hoping for a solution. My question is if this is kennel cough how long can it last? And could he have gotten it from the vaccine? Should I be worried? He is still very active and plays and eats like normal. He only really coughs at night and I feel so bad. Is there anything I can be doing to help? I have tried bringing him in the bathroom and letting him breathe in the steam but that didn't seem to help. I'm just so worried. He is about 18 weeks now. The vet kept saying the cough could last a while. Thanks in advance for the help. |
Your pup has contracted kennel cough from the vaccine. That is exactly why I never recommend it be given to young pups. The virus just has to run its course. If the congestion and coughing get worse you can put the pup on antibiotics to prevent secondary infection but they won't help the cough itself. Most strains of kennel cough are viral. Don't worry, he'll get better. I would suggest that unless you need the vaccination for boarding you tell your vet you DO NOT want the vaccine given again. |
