Bella HATES getting her teeth brushed! Bella really really hates getting her teeth brushed. I took her to get them cleaned last year and I planned on doing it again this year but I would really like to brush them once a day as well. Does anyone have any advice on how to get them to not mind getting their teeth brushed? |

You are smart to try to get her to brush her teeth. My Barney is 10 and he's got the smile of a puppy and has never needed a cleaning nor does he have any tartar on his teeth....all because of good home care. And I don't brush their teeth every day - more like 2-3x a week but I do a thorough job and they eat many natural foods to help clean their teeth. It is just about consistency - use your finger and play games with her until she fully accepts it. I always follow up tooth brushing with something FANTASTIC - like a yummie cookie or a treat. They know it is coming and they wait for it. Good luck! |
My Truffle hates having her teeth brushed as well. I only had her teeth cleaned one time and it was too rough on her. I use LEBA III every day since then and her teeth are sparkling clean. They sell dentaclean, but that didn't work for her. My vet told me if I use the LEBA she should never need her teeth cleaned again - that was 3 years ago. On my next YT, I plan to try to get them used to brushing as soon as possible. Truffle was an "inheritance" and I got her at 2 when my mother passed away. I think my mother just did not brush her teeth so she didn't get used to it. I wish she would let me brush, but she is now 9 and still refuses. |
Hit "submit" too soon. I meant to end it with good luck with yours !! |
Jackson hates his teeth being brushed, but he's gotten better. I started taking it slowly, and I usually do it when he's in the bath tub, so it ends up being about once a week. I also do daily maintenance with Petzlife gel. :) |
Thanks everyone for all your advice!!! I think I will try and find a flavor she likes and use my finger at first to get her used to it. Hopefully that will work. If it doesn't I will try the LEBA III spray. I only say I will do that as a last resort because it is expensive. Thanks again! This site is the best!!!! |
I don't know if it is as good as brushing, but I use the CET poultry flavor toothpaste on a child size toothbrush. I squeeze it deep into the bristles and hold the brush while my Maddie chews on it to get the toothpaste. I move the brush around so she "chews" from each side of her mouth and she will even use her front teeth. I figure this is better than nothing!! I follow it up a few times a week with the Petzlife gel |
I tried really hard to get them to like having their teeth brushed but it has been a few years and still comes down to me having to tackle them. . . . |
Cooper absolutely LOVES getting his teeth brushed. We have Enzadent poultry flavor. I brush teeth and groom on the bar in my kitchen. When I go get the towel to put down on the bar, Cooper starts spinning because he's so excited. I use the rubber fingerbrush and just let him chew on my finger. If you make it a little game, it might be more enjoyable. He loves the game and the flavor. |
I've tried everything with Jackson, and I am very much a believer in making every situation a positive experience, etc. The toothbrush is something he simply hates. I use real meat, like chicken, and I'll give him a piece and show him in the toothbrush and he slinks his head down but does allow me to grab him. Then trying to get the actual brush into his mouth is a task. I find putting him in my lap and sitting indian style on the floor, and prying open his mouth works lol. I do a really quick brushing and it's probably a crappy job but at least it's something. I rub a little Petzlife gel on his teeth too and he doesn't mind that at all; quick and easy. |
Andy hates having his teeth brushed, In fact he does not like you doing things with his mouth except kisses. This has been ever sinse he had all his baby teeth pulled out (19). I still try though |
