waiting for my vet to call back...any advice?
 
I hate to share this, but I'm going to in hopes that I can find out information based on everyone's experiences. Khloe just took the Panacur C dewormer about a month ago for 3 days, and today I noticed that she was scooting her rear down my runner in the hallway. She hasn't done this at all until today, and only for a brief moment.

Still, I'm concerned. I know that there are two things that this could mean; she has worms or she may need to have her glands expressed. I've never had an animal with this issue, and perhaps I'm overreacting over nothing. With this, would she be persistently scooting around everywhere, or is a brief scoot something to be worried about?

Also, we fed her a lot more table food on vacation than we ever let her consume at home. Could that be the culprit? Sorry to gross you all out. Any advice is appreciated; my vet may not call back until later this afternoon.

That's good you are checking with your vet, always a good idea. I've had most every dog here scoot their bottom at one time or another....with them it's always been because they had a piece stuck on their hair. Sometimes even a tiny piece will make them scoot to get it off. I've never had one w/worms or anal glands that needs to be expressed.

That's a relief. I'm hoping it is nothing to be worried about. I've never had a dog with worms or that needed their glands expressed either...yet. Her vet is great, he's just not quick about calling back. My neighbor shows Yorkies, and she said that a foul odor would be present if it was a gland issue. I hope she's right.

:thumbup: I was going to suggest the same thing. Have you looked at her little bottom to see if she might have something clinging?

It is SOOO nice to read a post from someone AFTER they called the vet rather than before. What a WONDERFUL yorkie mom you are.

It is possible that your sweetie could be having Anal Gland issues. Good luck!

No signs of anything clinging. She needs to go back to the groomer to have her paws and hygienic areas trimmed. She is going the first of next week. She had sand in her BMs at the beach; I had to call her vet down there for that also. I bet her vet is getting tired of me...

LOL- My favorite vet and I are on a first name basis, I call so often. But she knows I take a vested interest in my dog's health and I know she's always going to give me a straight answer.

As for the dragging- my doxie will sometimes do it when he's constipated, just before passing a really hard poo. The dragging is almost like he's trying to "work it out".

Sometimes they do this just to "wipe their bum". I know...kind of gross. But I have the same thing with my Biewers. I talked to the Vet and everything was fine "back there". She said "sometimes they use the rug like we use TP". Oh boy!

Fynn does the dragging right before he needs to make a poopie. But only sometimes. Like, if he's eaten more recently or eaten something that didn't really agree with his wittle tum-tum.

I hope her vet isn't getting tired of me. I respect him for giving me the opportunity to try to figure out the little quirks over the phone instead of making me come in every time. I'm just not crazy about having to wait it out. And I worry that if he calls late in the afternoon and thinks that I should bring her in that I will have to wait until the following day or go to an aftercare clinic.

Yep, my biewer Jordy does this, too. :eek: So far he's the only one of mine, thank goodness!

If the anal glands are just full, you won't smell anything. Diet can effect their performance, and between the sand and the food last week she very well may be having a temporary problem. They can become painful... you may see her shaking or even hiding in places she doesn't normally go. If it is her glands... I wouldn't wait a week to see the groomer, the glands can rupture on their own (you don't want that to happen). I would plan on taking her in... my vet will see mine without an appointment for anal gland expression, or sometimes have a tech do it.

Sometimes when the glands are full, scooting will express them somewhat, but it's very stinky....

They have a 3:30 appointment. Just for the peace of mind, I'm going to take her in. I'm not very knowledgeable on the subject, but if they examine her and find nothing, they won't charge very much. And if they do find that she has a problem, she will have it taken care of. I really hope I'm just being paranoid. I will let you all know what I find out as soon as we get home. Wish us luck.
