am i doing something wrong? HELP! My puppy Kailee is 10 weeks old and she has been eating Science Diet, she is doing fine but her coat is not shiny and I feel that I can feed her something better! Today I went to Petco and bought her Wellness Just for Puppies because I have heard good things about it. I fed her about 6 kibbles just to try it out because I didnt know if she was going to be able to swallow them since the kibbles are bigger. Well she ate them mixed with her regular food and right after she went outside and almost immeadiately pooped ALOT and it was very loose. Does that mean this food isnt good for her? Should I try something different? |
Sorry i cant help. I hope she is ok. xxx |
Whenever you change their diet, GI issues are bound to occur. I would start by giving her a very small portion of Wellness. Maybe a ratio of about 1:8, Wellness:Science Diet. Increasing the additions after several days. Allow her system to become accustomed to the new food slowly as she is still so young. I would not feed her straight Wellness right off the bat, as that is probably the reason for the loose stools. Slow is the way to go to keep their GI tract functioning optimally. edited for: I know you only gave her around 6 bites of kibble to start off, but she also got some in the food, so that is a lot to start with and could be the reason for the issues. I would not switch to another food as this will only cause more issues. |
I don't think the food was bad for her at all... In my experience with Taycie and listening to others when switching from a food like Science Diet, to something like Wellness in most dogs it takes time. Wellness is a WONDERFUL dog food and many people like it. It can be rich because it is a higher quaility food and sometimes puppies have a hard time with it. Transition SLOW with it... (Like you mentioned) and see if that helps. Yorkies have sensitive tummies and it could just be because its new... If she dosen't seem to agree with it, there are other brands out there that are wonderful Blue Buffalo, Solid Gold, Canidae, Innova, etc. Every puppy is different, although some may do wonderful on Wellness other puppies may not agree, just find something that works for you and you feel happy about feeding. I do applaud you for making a switch! |
Thank You all for your help! :) I will keep on trying and make the change as slow as necessary.. I had been meaning to change her food for quite some time but I just could not decide what food to feed her! Hopefully she adjusts with time :D |
Not only should you transition very slowly, but account for the fact that Wellness is a richer food - higher protein/calories - so you will be feeding fewer kibble, a smaller portion. In other words, you won't be switching kibble for kibble or portion for portion. Overfeeding can also contribute to loose stools. |
I fed her less kibble at dinner today and she seemed to do fine, but right now (3:30am) she threw up a little.. Not food or anything it was more of a yellow liquid. Can this be the food? :( |

Oh! I'm so relieved:) I'm pretty sure she was hungry :) I'm going to go as slow as possible so age won't be sick! This morning I fed her and took her outside and she pooped alot but not loose it was almost hard! :D (I never thought I would be excited for poop) :p |
when was her last meal last night; feed her around 7 or 8pm that way she wont get hungry and vomit in the morning. and then feed her breakfast around 7am. add water if you are feeding dry food to make easier to digest. some digestive enzymes and probiotic will help her GI system. try animal essential plant enzymes and probiotic. |
I had the issue with the loose stool when I switched Fynnlie to Blue. He wasn't thrilled with the Science Diet that the breeder sent us home with, ie, he wouldn't even go over to the bowl. When I switched it over, I just had to switch it. He wouldn't go near the Science Diet so it was right to the Blue. He had some very loose poopies for a day or so and then it was like, "Okay, mommy! Feeeeed meeeee moar!" Good luck! |
I feed her like around 8ish but I think she might need a little midnight snack. And the food is not the problem, she likes it but I know it's no good (or so I've heard) but since yesterday I've noticed that her nose is dry =S and I have no idea if this is really bad or normal =S |

either add water to the food or mix with wet food and water. |
Ok :) I'll try and put a little water next time :) she usually drinks a lot of water I have no idea why she hasn't today :( the top of her nose is moist but the rest is dry so I'll try and persuade her to drink more water! |

maybe a high quality kibble mixed with high quality wet food can do the trick. try welness simple solution duck and rice or salmon and rice. that should be easy on the stomach. and you can always add some water to that. good luck. |
