Eukanuba?? I have a question regarding what food brand do you use for your pup. I have been using eukanuda for my simba but I notice that he's been pooping about 5 times a day. I only feed him twice a day, morning and night and a snack in btwn nothing big. Now I don't know if it's soley becaue of the food brand or maybe it's just my pup. He's almost 4 months old. Does anyone have the same issue with eukanuba and if so what did you switch over too?? |
In general, puppies poop more than adults, but I'd think 5 times a day is a little excessive. It most likely is the food since it contains lots of by-products and fillers. My favorite kibbles are Orijen and Acana. :) Orijen has a puppy food, and Acana is an all life stages food. There's a few others I like and recommend, such as Nature's Variety, Fromm, Wellness, Go!/Now!, etc. :) |
The breeder where I got him said that eukanuba is best for him and so did the petsmart vet. So I'm a bit confused. Maybe I'm feeding him too much? I think I feed him about1:3 cup a dy. Is that too much? Or maybe I'm still getting his schedule figured out. Iono it's a but confusing cause there'sany things to factor in. But his poop isn't firm, it's somewhat firmish lol sorry for too much info. I'm just trying to figure out what's beat for him |

These are some good sites: Dog Food Reviews | Dog Food Ratings Dog Food Analysis - Reviews of kibble http://dogfoodchat.com/forum/ Here's a direct link to Eukanuba kibble: Eukanuba Dry Dog Food | Review and Rating Eukanuba was also recalled recently, and has been recalled quite a few times. Iams, Eukanuba pet food recall expands |
I totally agree with Brit! I also use the Dog Food Analysis link to choose our food. Right now I feed Innova and Wellness. PetSmart is now selling Wellness...super excited about that! They also sell Blue Buffalo which is a good food too. |
I couldn't agree more with Britster! I used to feed 9-month old Miloh Eukanuba until I began to notice the foul smell in both his poop & mouth. It's been a little over a month that we made the switch to Orijen (around the same price as Eukanuba), couldn't have made a better decision. The Dog Food Analysis website is great, check out a couple of food samples & I'm sure you will notice the difference in those quality foods. :) |
Thank you so much for all your help. We are deffinately going to make a switch. And I do notice the odor in his mouth and poop aswell. It's sad that vets don't even know what's best for them. Is it hard to switch food on the pups? I don't want him getting sick or anything. |
I agree with the other posters. 1-3 times a day seems to be about normal; 5 might be a little excessive. Could it be the kibble? Lets look at the ingredients. (I am assuming you are using the small breed puppy formula) The top 5 are: Chicken, chicken by product meal, Corn meal, Ground whole grain Sorghum, and Chicken fat. The first one I really do not see a huge problem with. However, chicken "By-Product" meal, is everything that comes from the chicken which is not otherwise used: such as beaks, feet, bones, etc. The Corn and Sorghum being in the # 2 and #3 spot is a major issue. The company is tyring to use these two in combination to replace a complete protein, that should be coming from meat. Corn is used as feed for animals that graze along with Sorghum, not to mention that their main use is as a carbohydrate to "stabilize" the kibble such that it will retain shape and consistency. Then chicken fat, well fat is needed however, I would prefer a fat that is healthier like one from salmon, which carries a dual nutritional purpose. My thoughts; I personally think the corn and sorghum are probably the reason behind the 5 + bowl movements. I would try a higher quality food, with quality meats and less, if any, grains. Best of luck in your choice! |

Definitely. I think you're supposed to do 75% of old food, and 25% of new food to start, and then gradually increase as the week goes on. |
You've gotten some great advice here. I see you're in OKC...you should be able to find premium quality dog foods at a local Ag Supply/Feed store or a pet specialty shop - these two usually offer the widest selections of the better foods. Also, Tractor Supply carries Taste of the Wild, which is a grain free food. And Petco and Petsmart have recently begun carrying a better selection of foods than they used to. The key is finding a food that your baby likes and that you feel good about feeding. Good luck! :) |
I can't thank you all enough for all your advice. I never really researched what the foods are actually made up of, I just assumed that the vet would know what's best. But now I know better and I will be buying him new food today. I couldn't believe what I read about eukanuba, it's was only a one star food brand. That's very sad..... |
Glad to hear you're making the switch! |
What is bone meal and chicken meal? Is that good or bad? |
Bone meal and chicken meal are generally good things. Bone meal provides calcium and other minerals. Chicken meal is chicken (flesh and skin) that has been dried, so it is a concentrated source of protein. It does not contain bone, entrails, beaks, feet, etc. You want to stay away from any food that has an ingredient described as a "by product." So plain old "chicken meal" is good, but "chicken by product meal" is bad. |
