Daddy Type Question. Maggie is now 6 months old and we will be bringing her new baby brother home next weekend. When I got Maggie she was on Eukanuba and I switched her to Holistic Select for small breed puppies. She continued with the goop in her eyes in the morning. I then switched her to Blue for small breed puppies and the same results. We are now on Wellness super mix for puppies and no change. The vet says that she is fine. I have to clean her face every day with unsented baby wipes. Do any of the yorkie moms out there have any suggestions. From what I have seen on here it is usually food related. |
Keep the hair by her eyes trimmed or kept in a clip. A great diet free of corn will help. Definitely keeping the hair away helps as well. It pokes them and causes the eye to water. I feed bubbles merricks before grain. |
Do you keep the hair trimmed short around her eyes? Even tiny hairs can cause her eyes to water and get goopy. On the subject of food...I feed Fromm's to my crew and they don't have eye boogies anymore. |
We use the Holistic Select for small breed puppies like you were using and haven't noticed Milli having any goop except when she's got hair in her eyes. The groomer is really great about keeping the hair around her eyes trimmed though so it's rarely a problem. I hope you figure out what's going on and find a way to keep the goop away! |
Pasquale had goopy eyes when he was little...then i started giving him distilled water as his drinking water. He's been goop-free ever since. :) |
All dogs get goop in their eyes no matter what- especially in the morning- Keoki is on the raw diet and his eyes are not so bad but every morning I wipe his eyes with a soft, clean kleenex or a wet wash cloth. It could be diet but also just a normal bodily function :) |
Oh also bottled or filtered water- we use those as well. |
I was going through this with my puppy at around 6 months old and also posted this question. I was told that if they are teething (which mine was) they most likely will get this eye goop. I too was told about giving bottled or distilled water instead of the tap. I switched to giving the bottled water and now he's a little older (7 mos) and the goop is pretty much gone. I didn't change the food. Not sure if he got over the teething or if the bottled water is what did it. |
Jackson got horrible gross goop while on Wellness, and Fromm. Some ingredient did not agree with him. I know it was the food, because a few days after switching, eye goop was gone. He will occasionally wake up with some eye crusties, as I call them, but they are hard and really easy to just pick out. Before, they were more runny and goopy and gross... even with his eye hair cut. So I think food definitely, plus environmental allergies can do it. Individual dogs may be more prone to it than others. Orijen, Acana, and Natures Variety Instinct seem to be the only 3 foods where he wakes up with almost virtually no eye boogers at all and I don't think it's a coincidence because I fed NV Instinct for a week, then tried feeding Fromm again, and after a few days... eye goop was back. |
