My new puppy still wont eat! Hi guys! About a month ago i adopted a 6 week old Yorkie puppy from a breeder. He told us that she was a wonderful eater, the alfa female and was a loner. He gave me a list of foods that she ate. He recomented not giving her dry food because she would loose weight. The first night I had her went well. She was able to eat a little bit of chicken and sleep without missing her family too much :). But after that night she hardly ate anything at all. I have to put food down her mouth to get her to eat and she looks like she lost weight. If it were not for my older dog (mini pincher), she would not be able to drink water anymore. (I give her milk too) I thought about having the two dogs eat together but the older dog is very protective over her food and I am afraid that she will hurt my puppy. She wont eat yogurt, any type of cerial, no fruit or people food. She only eats about a small handful of bitties per day with 45 milliliters of milk and water. Than I have to force her to eat the canned food. What can I do to get her to eat? :kiss: thank you! |
Sorry you are dealing with this, I know it is worrisome! How old is your puppy now? If you've had a chance to navigate through these forums, you probably already know that 6 weeks of age is way too young to bring a yorkie home :( This is one of the reasons why. I don't have experience with this so please do some more research on here before taking my advice... From what I've learned, you need to keep some Nutrical on hand. This will help maintain the puppies blood sugar level. Due to their size, it's very important that their blood sugar does not drop too low. If you see her trembling, lethargic, or acting 'weird' in any way, give her a drop or two. I used honey for my baby and it worked really well. You can also try a small amount of peanut butter. As for daily feedings, you or someone need to be present throughout the entire time she's fed. To ensure that she's actually eating. Keep doing what you've been doing as far as force feeding her. If it doesn't start to improve within the next few days, I'd take her to the vet for a check-up. Better safe than sorry. Your vet may be able to give you some helpful feeding pointers as well. Hi My Yorkie is 4 months old and he is a very picky eater also. The vet tells me that Yorkies are very picky eaters and not to worry. When I got him he weighed about 3 1/2/pounds and now he is up to almost 4 pounds so apparantly even though I think he's not eating enough, he is. I also give him nutrical every day along with my 9 month old shorkie who weighs about 11 lbs. I tried almost every dog food on the market and he would not eat anything. One day I tried Chef Michael and he loves it. I asked the vet about that because everybody seems to think that these dog foods are real garbage. My vet tells me that as long as he eats the food it's not garbage. |

I knew she had to be mine so I got her quickly. Her old living conditions were not in tip-top shape. She warmed up really fast. She is one month old now. Yorkies just nibble on dry food. A couple of spoonfuls of the tiny dry food is all my yorkie ate (daily) when I brought him home at 6 wks and he was only supposed to be 3-4 lbs but ended up being about 8 lbs. It's just because your pup is still so little. |

If she eats this Chef Michaels then don't add the cheese. But make sure she eats. No long play sessions, she should sleep at least 18 or more hours per day at this age. There are lots of helpfull "stickies" on here, and on the general forum about young pups. |

One more thought try Beneful also. Another garbage food according to people. My shorkie likes Beneful also. But most important get a tube of Nutri-cal because it kind of stimulates their appitites. I also give my dogs NUVET PLUS. You can get it on line and I give it to my dogs every day. Even my Basset Hounds who weigh 50 lbs each. |

I'm sorry but I'm confused. You said you got your puppy when she was 6 weeks old but that she's only one month old now. :confused: I don't have any other advice than that which has already been given. The grated parmesan cheese worked well for my Lulu (but she was 14 weeks when I got her). I just sprinkled it on her dry kibble & she began to eat. I only do it now as a special treat since she eats her kibble well. If your baby is already 2.5 lbs at one month old or even 2 months old, she will more than likely be larger than 5 lbs. The rule of thumb is to triple the 8 week weight or double the 12 week weight...but that's only a guesstimate & is not always accurate. |
