My Yorki will only eat dry dog food with shredded cheese on it. Hi, everyone!!, this is my first posting , i just joined this morning. I have a 10 month old Yorkie female, her name is Chelsey. I am currently feeding her Blue Buffalo dry dog food. She will not eat it unless it has shredded cheese mixed with it. What can i do to get her to eat it alone? Should i let her go for a day without mixing the shredded cheese with it and see if she gets hungry enough to eat it alone or what? |
Good morning and welcome to YT.. I used to sprinkle a very little bit on Bailey's food but now it's strictly a treat. I think too much cheese means a chubby yorkie. Bailey has been good on eating so i'm not sure what will help.. Just welcoming you, I guess. :D good luck! |
When I got Beamer the breeder had told me the brand of dog food he was on, and also she always melted some cheese on top of the food. So, first morning we had him I got up and put his food down in a little bowl. He wouldn't eat, he looked at me as if to say "what is this?", then it hit me, I hadn't melted cheese on top. So, put cheese on top and popped it in the microwave and melted the cheese. He ate every bit of food! Then one day I noticed him eating Lil Bit's food and she didn't have cheese on hers. So, next time I put his food down I left off the cheese. He ignored it and went to Lil Bit's food bowl to eat. So, I just put both their food in one bigger bowl, no cheese, and he ate it just fine. I think it was something on the lines of "Lil Bit is probably getting better food than I am" Now they have the same bowl and the same food. No problems. |
Awww, I love to mix either cheese, steak, chicken, in "lil man's" dry food once a week. He KNOWS every sunday is treat day! My best buddy!! |
You could try just using less and less cheesetilyhou are only putting a half dzen little shreds on it. But I would definitely try to get him off of it, or at least cut way down. How old is she? and how big is she? |
what about a sprinkle of low fat grated Parmesan cheese? |
What about mixing some cooked veggies in there? Lucy loves cooked carrots and peas now and then. She also likes green beans; egg white; cottage cheese; lowfat plain yogurt; and some canned dog food like Wellness Chicken. |
She is ten months old and weighs 6 pounds. |

You might be surprised at how easy it would be to get her to eat just the dry. I know I was. I have had what seemed to be some finicky eaters now and then and would try all kinds of things sprinkled with the dry to get them to eat. Then for the longest time I also fed them raw medallions going half & half with those & the dry. After getting my 4th dog, I decided the mixture-thing was getting to be a bit much, both in cost & time so I decided we were going to strictly dry kibble. I weaned them off the raw using less & less in their dishes until the last of what I had was gone. I was surprised at how easily they accepted just the kibble!!!:D There may have been a meal or two that was picked at or missed off and on for a few days, but that was it. I think that at 10 months & 6 lbs, your yorkie will be fine if she picks at her food for a day or so. Just watch & make sure she eats even just a little. Sometimes they get bored with the "same ol food", maybe it's time to switch brands or flavors??? Go easy on the treats in between meals too, so that she gets good and hungry. And/or if it's possible, just leave the dish down with her daily amount of kibble available to her all day so she can eat at her will. Good luck to you! |
We use to feed ours some cheese too. They all love it. THe breeder told me never to give them cheese. She said they have very small arteries and it could eventually kill them. She said she told her son not to feed his yorkie cheese but he kept on giving it to her, and lost her to heart problems during surgery when she was only about 3yrs. old. I don't know if its good or bad but we did stop giving ours cheese and they like apples, carrots, and cheerios is a big favorite. You might try low fat cottage cheese mixed in with the kibble. Ours love that too. |
my baby is the same way.. but i noticed that when i put the cheese in top of his dry food he only eats the cheese and leave the dry food there:eek:.. now i dont know what else to do...because he wont eat the dry food. |
You have to be careful with feeding cheese, the fat content is high, if she is given too much, it can possibly lead to pancreatitis. Each day I would feed less cheese, the transition shouldn't be too difficult. |
