Angel Eyes.. Tear stains... Any thoughts? I recently ordered online Angel Eyes for my 5 month old yorkie puppy I have noticed the corners of her eyes are red and I was hoping to fix the problem. Then after reading alot of people have said they discontinued using Angel Eyes because of a low grade antibiotic called tylosin as tartrate and some dogs were having issues with it.. vomiting, diarrhea. So now I am nervous of my purchase... I don't want to give my sweet girl something that will cause problems like that. Since I have had her she has never had an upset stomach and I dont want to make her uncomfortable over tear stains. I also have read that tear stains can be caused by their diet. Taycie is currently on Blue Buffalo Small Breed puppy formula and it has no added colorings or flavors that can also cause staining.. I have switched her water to filtered because I also heard that helps.. Any thoughts? I am nervous now to start Angel Eyes and I am seriously considering sending it back but I thought before I did I could ask all the wonderful mommy's out there for some much needed advice! Thanks:) |
Don't use it until she's one yr old. |
I've just started using it on my one Biewer because his eye discharge had really increased. It seems to be helping quite a bit. The antibiotic is in there to help combat the yeast infection that is often affiliated with the red staining. Also known as red yeast infection. The red can also be caused by other things and not necessarily a yeast infection. Things like food as you have mentioned is one of them. One other option you can try is to use bottled water for his drinking water. Not tap water. Or you can start to add a little vinegar to his drinking water if you are using tap water. Know that some discharge is common with this breed. And some tear more than others. Good luck! |
It is a low dose antibiotic and it is not something I'd use for something that really isn't medical. But if it gets really excessive and bothers her, then I would talk to a vet about using it. It does also falsely elevate liver enzymes. So if they go up, you wouldn't know if it's from the drug or a real problem. |

Angel Eyes has a very small dosage of an antibiotic, and I've read that many people use it with good results. I haven't read about the diarrhea and vomiting, but I guess some dogs could be sensitive to it. You can also have your vet prescribe the antibiotic TYLAN, and some people say that this is a better and cheaper way to do it, or ask your vet his opinion. I think I would do a food change before I tried the drug, but an antibiotic shouldn't be that harmful for short-term use. |
Nancy that article is fantastic! Thanks! |
we use this on our Maltese and on my moms white chihuahua i have even used it on my brown chi mix to help clean the fur around her eyes because they get gunky from tearing i like it because you put it on the fur not in there eye or in there bodies Four Paws Crystal Eye Tear Stain Remover at PETCO |
I decided to be the crazy mom and bug my vet once again with all my many questions.... I told her my concerns about Angel Eyes and she said NO WAY! I was shocked! So although it has worked for some I think I will be sending my shipment back! Thanks so much to all those for there wonderful ideas.. I am going to try some of the more topical approach instead of something she will be eating! I am just one nervous first time mom and don't want anything to happen to my sweet girl! |
One of the major issues with it is that using an antibiotic for a non-medical problem is really not a good reason to chance resistance. Since it is used long-term, it's not something I'd use (unless there are problems with yeast and such where it has to be dealt with). Ellie's vet doesn't like the idea much either... |
Bottled or Filtered water helps relieve tear stains- try that :) |
i did switch her over to bottled water today however i noticed some bottled water is distilled... just curious is distilled water ok to drink? |
Puppies tear as they grow and the shape of their face changes. They also tear when teething. This condition is normal and will often go away on its own. Please do NOT give antibiotics to puppies to stop tear staining. You may set them up for a lifetime of digestive disorders, discolored teeth, yeast infections and other health problems. Just read this in an article online! Glad I called the vet.... bye angel eyes on the way back you go! |
tearing My tiny little girl is 6 mos. now. She tears all the time i can bath her then the next day her whole face is all wet.I use filtered water and only feed her chicken, brown rice and carrots. She does not stain or have gunk just always a completely wet face. She has done this since I got her at 4 mos.old.I emailed her breeder to ask about this since i have 2 other Yorkies and they do not tear at all but she never answered me.She is so beautiful but hate that her face is always wet like all the doggie kisses but not with a wet face.lolDoes anyone know wht this would happen? |
