Spaying and Allergies Okay, so I figured a new thread would be best to answer the new question that has come up. Before Bri had her reaction, my vet said she was good and the next thing we needed to look into is spaying. My question is, with her background of reactions to vaccines, is it safe to spay? Also what precautions do I need to look into? Any websites or information would be very helpful! Thanks! |
I don't think a reaction to vaccines would necessarily pose a problem with surgery. However, what was suggested by Ellie May was that your dog could potentially have a liver problem because reactions to medications are a symptom of liver shunt. I believe a bile acid test was suggested. As far as other things so, a pre-op blood screen is normally done before surgeries to ensure proper organ function and that your pup can properly handle the anesthesia. This is recommended by most vets and a very common procedure. |
A Bile Acid Test was suggested and I am getting more information on that. I did look into it, and I called my breeder to ask if there was anything genetic. She said that the test wouldn't hurt but after reviewing all her information on symptoms and personally seeing how Bri acts, she honestly believes this is not the case. Bri has never had any other symptoms of a Liver Shunt except this recent vaccine issue. That being said, I need to research a lot more to be informed, so that I can explain to my vet. I am just very worried about losing her to too much medicine and not being properly informed of the conditions. Thanks |

Let's wait and see if other informative posters know anything about a link or increased risk of allergeric rx's to sedatives given an reaction to vaccines. And is there a pre test one can do to ascertain if a dog will have an allergic rx to one or more sedatives. Hope you get some replies :) |
