Concerns about spaying My yorkie weighs about 3.5 lbs but may have gained some since her last visit to the vet which was about 1 mth ago. Is this a safe weight for her to get spayed at? She is already 6 mths old but I've been waiting to give her enough time to lose as many of her puppy teeth as possible if not all of them so that we can get any stragglers pulled when she gets spayed if they have not all fallen out by then. Are there any extra precautions I should take or extra questions I should ask aside from the ones listed on the anesthesia protocol sticky? Would it be best to not have her spayed at all? I would really appreciate anyone's experienced input! thanks! |
I have had mine spayed weighing under 4 lbs and they all did fine. As long as you trust your vet, they use the anesthesia recommended and have the pre surgical blood work done. It is always scary for us Mom's to make the appointment but it is rally best for our babies. They do better than we do. Keep us posted. |
Spaying is an excellent idea. It will prevent any ooops breeding or the hassle during a heat cycle. My Vet prefers 7 months old in case the adult teeth are slow coming in. The anesthesia sticky is a good one! |
Thanks!! I'm reallllly scared/nervous about this. We love her dearly and would be torn if we lost her. We expect her to have at least 15 years of love and life to give! |

Yes! She is slowly losing her puppy teeth. There is always blood on her toys right now since she has loose teeth in her mouth and the adult teeth are coming in from behind the puppy tooth. I was lucky enough to find one of her teeth next to her and her toy before she ate it so I saved it! :) |
It's great you are researching this, and I agree getting the blood work done first and using the correct anesthesia is really important. I will tell you that in my years at Yorkietalk I've read at least 5 threads where a tiny wasn't spayed, and accidentally got pregnant, either by a visiting puppy, who they didn't think was old enough for that stuff, or left alone in the yard for just a second. There are just so many possibilities. Don't forget, females can get pregnant all their lives so you will have to be extra conscientious, her entire life. Panties and bellybands don't work. Also, a first time pregnancy after the age of 4 or 5 is really dangerous. Remember that spaying is much safer than pregnancy, especially with a tiny, and spaying when they're not pregnant is the safest of all. |

My female is 3.15 pounds and my vet wants to wait a bit to spay her because of her weight and a retained tooth. She is scheduled for mid September, but we might hold off even longer if she doesn't lose the tooth. I'm glad you are researching this... I know lots of people have their tinies spayed, and they do great. I wish you luck :) |
Best of luck with our little ones in their spay. Maggie was just under 4 lbs when she was spayed and did great. She had some discomfort the first night but once we gave her pain meds she quieted right down and went to sleep. She was quiet the next day but then the wild woman was back. lol We did pre-op bloodwork also. |

Lucy is 3.8 lbs and we waited until she was about 10 months old prior to spaying here. I was worried, like you, about her small size and the anesthesia. In addition, she also has mild liver issues that the Vet has to consider when administering anesthesia. I went over the anesthesia protocol with him and some questions that people had provided to me. Ultimately, she ended up having to have two baby teeth pulled - so that's what spurred me on to do the spay as well. She did fine! Absolutely do the pre bloodwork. |
