Confused about Poppy's weight. Hi everyone I am a little confused about Poppy's weight. Poppy is 12 weeks old now and as you can see from my photo's still very small. She was weighed at the vets at 10 weeks old and the vet said she weighed just over a pound (1lb 3oz). I took Poppy to Pets at Home pet store yesterday and asked about Frontline spot on to prevent her from getting fleas, they told me the dog has to weigh at least 2kg before they can use it. I asked if they would weigh her and they did, she weighed in at 1.6kg, I checked on a weight converter and this comes in at 3.3lbs  Is this correct? she dosn't seem to have grown much in the past couple of weeks so how could she have put on so much weight? Is this normal or am I just being really stupid? :questione Poppy is my first yorkie and my first puppy so I dont really know what to expect in terms of weight gain, or am I converting the weight wrong? I just want to know if this sounds correct because if it is I will have her weighed at Pets at Home again but if not then I wont. Thanks in advance! :rollingey |
No - there is definitely something wrong. A puppy cannot gain over 2 lbs in just 2 weeks. The scales may have been off - somewhere. I kind of get a rough idea as to how much my dogs weigh by weighing myself on a regular home scale and then weighing myself again holding the puppy. My home scale goes up to the half pound - so like I said - I can figure it out roughly. |
Rachel when i seen your bf holding poppy i was amazed that you said she weighed only 1lb as she did seem alot bigger than my poppy who is alittle over 1lb. I think from what your saying she seems to be around the correct weight for her size. She is soooo gorgeous!! xx |
I would weigh her again. a Kg is 2.2lbs, so 2 kgs would be 4.4lbs. Do you have a kitchen scale you can double check her with? Or pop by your vet and just ask if you can weigh her there? |
Hmm so it must have been the vets scales which were off do you think? Im just confused LOL! Is 3.3lbs healthy for a 12 week old? |
Mine gained about 1/2 a pound every 2 weeks in that stage (yes, they were little oinkers) :) I would have her reweighed at the vet's office, since that's the one that they will be using for all of her medication calculations, etc. 1.6 kgs = 3.5 lbs. Are you sure the vet didn't say she weighed 1.3 KGS, which would be 2.9 lbs? That would put the weight gain in the right scale, so to speak. |
My vet weighed Poppy in Kg too so i had to work out what she weighed in 1lbs lol xxx |

I will try weighing myself then weighing myself holding her tonight and see what it says. I dont know if I would have to make an appointment to get her weighed or just walk in. |
Is that a normal weight for a 12 week old though? I dont mind if she grows to be 100lbs LOL but it seems a lot for her age, I see a lot of peoples dogs here weigh 5-7lbs some weigh 3-4lbs that I have heard of and thats about Poppys weight already! I cant imagine how small those dogs must be. She has a fat little tummy on her but is still tiny, do you think Im over feeding her? |
LOL your not over feeding her she is just 12weeks old they are allowed to have fat little tum tum. phone your vets and ask if they weigh in Kgs or lbs :) xxx |
Which vet are you using? |

So you dont think Im over feeding her or anything LOL :) |
I have a postal scale that I weigh Lulu on. So far it's read exactly as the vet's scale. As far as if 3.5 lbs at 12 weeks is normal...yes, it can be. The rule of thumb is to double the 12 week weight to get the adult weight. So that would put Poppy around 7 lbs. Now keep in mind, it's not always accurate. I'd call your vet to ask if her 10 week weight was in pounds & ounces or kgs...then ask if you need an appointment for a weight check. |
Rachael, My Brooklynn has just turned 3 months and she weights 3.1 pounds and she is still really small. I just weighed her at the vet on saturday. I SWEAR I DONT KNOW WHERE SHE IS PUTTING THE WEIGHT BECAUSE SHE IS STILL SO LIGHT AND TINY LOL. she might have quarters in her pockets lol. |

I have just moved to Hexham so i use a vets in hexham. Did you phone the vets and see if they weighed her in lbs or kgs? xx |
I know we don't use the same vet but mine lets me pop in and weigh Harley whenever I want to as long as they have an open room. |
My Brooklyn is a big baby- she's 15 weeks and weighs around 4.5 lbs already and boy is she a rough and tumble tomboy. I just love her to pieces.:wub: |
Hmm so it must have been the vets scales which were off do you think? Im just confused LOL! Is 3.3lbs healthy for a 12 week old? __________________ Lots of Love Poppy's Mamma If the vet's scale is wrong there definitely is a problem since they prescribe based on body weight. Also Zoe was 3 lbs at 12 weeks, 4 lbs at 16 weeks. Not sure of her weight now but she gained a pound a month and vet said that she wasn't overweight. She's probably at least 5 lbs now because she's 20 weeks. So it sounds to me like 3.3 lbs at 12 weeks is normal. |

Im thinking they weighed her in kg though seen as she said 1.3 at 10 weeks and Pets at Home said she was 1.6 at 12 weeks... Maybe she just made a mistake. I weighed myself last night then weighed myself holding her and there was around 3lb difference so Pets at Home must have been right :) |
Aw She is a right cutie :) xxx |
