We use Interceptor together with Frontline Plus. Vets in our area do not recommend Comfortis.

Leptospirosis vaccines - we do not give it to our dogs. You can tell your vet that the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) in its 2006 guidelines points out the high incidence of reactions in SMALL BREED dogs -- that means more than dachshunds.

You will likely be told that the reports of reactions are "anecdotal" -- to this, the follow up question is whether vets in your state are REQUIRED to report reactions and to whom? If there are no reporting requirements, then you have your answer.

You can also remind your vet that the vaccine does not cover all serovars of the disease and prevalence of each serovar varies in incidence. So to follow up on WM's suggestion, I'd ask what serovars they see in your area, what the prevalence is, and then I'd ask the follow up question on whether the vaccine covered that particular serovar. I would also ask them if the vaccine not only covered the particular serovar but whether the knew the efficacy of the vaccine on that particular serovar.

When you receive all of those answers, if you do, you will likely do as many of us and decline to give that vaccine.

Great info. Thanks! During my research I read a lot about the serovars, etc...vaccine not providing full immunity to all of them. I feel comfortable with my decision to decline. Thank you to all who gave some input. :) I also think I am going to give the Sentinel a try when Lulu's next heartworm dose is needed. I just pray it works out ok with no reactions.

Did your vet tell you that Sentinel doesn't kill fleas? It only kills the eggs and larvae.

Yeah, but that is paying too much if you purchase Sentinel and Advantage or Frontline. I have two pups on Sentinel and they never have fleas.
Sentinel is expensive compared to Heartgard.

That's why I use Interceptor and Advantage.

I use Sentinel on Rosie and have never had problems with any side effects. I also do not have fleas. However, I also use Advantix because of the ticks in my area. Ticks are a major problem here in Arkansas. And yes ladyjane it is expensive. It cost me a lot of money to do both. I only have to use the Advantix in the middle of summer. I don't use it after the "tick season" is gone. If fleas are the only problem, I think Sentinel alone is just fine. However, if ticks are an issue then you will need additional protection.
