The break up of shots Callie is due for a lot of stuff in September and I need some opinions on how to break it up because last time they gave her the three shots she need at the same time she was not feeling to good for a few days and even being a bigger yorkie at 16 pounds her shots are going to have to be broken up this time but how should I do that. She is due for a check up, blood test, fecal and then the shots she is due for are Bordetella, Lyme, and Lepto. |

If Lepto or Lyme is not endemic, I wouldn't get them (esp. Lepto). If she does need everything you mentioned, plus the Core vaccines -- then I'd break them apart by 2-3 weeks (each). Also, if she had trouble w/ vaccines in the past - I'd pre-medicate w/ Benadrly if this were my kiddo. :) |

I do exactly as Ann suggested. My dogs will get one shot at their visit, two weeks later we come back for Lyme (tics are bad here) and then 3 weeks after that we do DHPP. No lepto here and rabies is only every 3 years. I do not Bordotella shot my dogs because I have a mobile groomer who grooms in my home (not a van/truck) and I do not kennel them. |
Sorry..posted twice! Not sure how that happened! |
My Vinnie has had definite issues with shots in the past (nausea, vomiting, general discomfort) in the past following vaccinations. The first thing we do is eliminate shots that are not needed or shots that can have titers done instead (note: A titer is a blood test that shows if you still carry immunity to something you were previously vaccinated for. There is a titer available for the distemper shot; my Vinnie had his last distemper shot five years ago, but still had adequate immunity according to his titer. The titer is accepted in lieu of a shot, provided it shows sufficient immunity). For the vaccinations Vinnie must have (rabies, bordatella, etc), we split those up. He will get one shot at his annual appointment, and then we wait 3-4 weeks before doing the next shot. My vet's office is very cool about this and doesn't charge me an additional office visit (just the cost of the shot). This process has resulted in no further issues with vaccinations for Vinnie. |

OP: My concern is that there are three vaccines listed and these are just the non-core ones! Then she has to be getting DHP and rabies. Overtime, this could be very taxing on her little system. I know sometimes non-core vaccines are needed, but this looks like a lot. |

Lepto he had a terrible reaction too. He was lethargic, couldn't barely walk, was trembling, etc. Never again, and it's on all of his vet papers NOT to give it to him. Vet recommended against the Lymes vaccine for Jackson, even after he HAD lymes disease, she said it doesn't cover all 'versions' of it. And Lymes is such an easy thing to treat if caught early. 30 days of antibiotics and he was cleared up. I'm not planning on getting Jackson anymore vaccines currently... He will be 2yrs old in October and had these: DHPP at 8 weeks, DHLPP at 12 weeks (when he had reaction), DHPP at 15 weeks, Rabies at like 6 months old. Then DHPP booster at 1 yr old, and then a few weeks later rabies booster. Oh, he also had bordatella just because we're around sooo many dogs, etc. I think I'm going to plan on following Dr. Jean Dodds vaccine protocol but I'm not 100% sure. My vet said he's good on DHPP and rabies for the next 3 yrs. I guess I'll decide in 3yrs if he gets more DHPP :) |
