Question for those with tiny yorkies
 
We just got a 5 month old baby girl who weighs just under 2 lbs. I am wondering about vaccines since she only had one set and eventually getting her spayed. Any advice would be appreciated?

This is something that has to be decided upon with your vet, how much you take her out in public.

My vet was very cautious. Not sure which vaccine she divided into two portions because Troy was so small but she was well aware of the risks with him being so small.

Troy was 2.8 pounds for such a long time. He got weighed at Doggy Daycare yesterday and he's a whopping 4 pounds at a year old.

When did she have her first set? I thought she would have had 2-3 by now?

She had her first at 3 months. We just got her yesterday but yes she should have had 2-3 by now. So well see what the vet wants to do... I'm going to take her to Banfield and do a wellness plan I think...

Not at this size.....one needs to be very cautious when innoculating a wee one.

Puppies get some of the antibodies from their mother, each baby is different. If your baby has already had one vaccine and did fine, I would talk to your vet about lowering the doesage for the next round or, have her titer tested to see if she carries the antibodies, (they either do or they don't) depending on the out come of the test, it is my understanding, she may or may not need the boosters.
Also, I was told by my vet recently, Parvo cases are up this year so becareful.

:thumbup:I have a litter of little ones that are around 25 ounces at 8 weeks and have chose not to start vaccines until next week, at least on the boys.

I give my 9 week old, 2 pound, puppies the full series of 3.

When did she get her first set? If it was after 4 months then she should be good until her 1 year booster.

The way I understand it, they ned to give 3 vaccinations at 9, 12. 16 weeks, because they do not know when the mothers immunity is completely gone. But by 16 weeks, it is completely gone, so 1 should do it.

That is my understanding.

Just fyi...most likely, Banfield will tell you she needs to "start all over" on her shots and they'll recommend 3-4 series. This is not actually true.

If this were me, I'd follow Dr. Shultz (U of Madison) here....he says at a minimum, a puppy should receive 1 set of vaccinations at around 16 weeks of age, and this is sufficient for puppy vaccines (vs. the 3-4 series - which have now been missed, in this case). In other words, you could do the vaccines at any time now (since she is older than 16wks), and then just do an adult booster in 1 year.

Banfield is widely known for over-vaccinating. :thumbdown A lot of them also have very poor reputations (granted, there are some good Banfield facilities, but not many). Please consider finding a good vet, preferrably one who has a lot experience with these tiny ones.

Thank you for taking the time to reply... I am going to call around and compare some prices.... Most vets i have already called are very very pricey as. In 55-65 just for the office visit... Thanks again for the heads up! I will look up that doctor.
