Warning to all Yorkie Mom's (and Dad's) HGE Warning to my Yorkie friends...this syndrome nearly took my 6 yr old Yorkie boy from me: Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis (HGE) The onset of HGE is usually very quick/immediate, with no previous warning signs and occurs in healthy young dogs. If you suspect your pet may have HGE, seek veterinary attention immediately. Because there is no known cause of the synd...rome, there are no preventative measures that can be recommended in these patients. Cant stress enough QUICK action is necessary......my lil' guy was in shock from bleeding out just a few hours into this disorder. He spent 3 nights in intensive care at our local animal hospital, and the whole ordeal left us all in a tailspin. A seemingly healthy young dog can lose his life in hours with this condition. Thank the Lord, he's home this evening, on 5 medications round the clock...but grateful he survived! |
Thanks so much for sharing your story. |
I am glad your lil one survived this terrible ordeal. |
Sorry that you & your pup had to go through all of this, but I am so glad to hear that he survived. :) |
I have a friend who almost lost her female Biewer to HGE...they suspected bacteria from rawhide, bully stick type chews. They said the chew gets wet, bacteria grows, they chew on it again and get the bacteria in their system. I don't know if this is what actually causes HGE but that is what was suspected in my friend's case. I'm glad your little guy is o.k. and home again. |

Glad your boy is ok... |
I am sorry you and your pup had to go thru this but thanks for taking the time to warn others. I am so glad you had a positive outcome. |
So glad your pup survived. Just a note: Mine got HGE twice in one year... he was never given chews of any kind... |
Yorkiemum: I am very happy that your boy pulled through. Thank you for this warning. Quote:

Thank you all...and thanks to my teenage son for alerting me so quickly that something was very wrong. Mozart (my fur-baby) was hiding his bloody vomit/diarrhea in a back bathroom, and my son discovered it while I was at work. It's a dogs natural instinct to hide when wounded or weak (according to my vet), so 'prey' cannot harm them. For this healthy robust 7 yr old Yorkie, it was a mere 6 hours from first onset to full blown shock from blood loss/dehydration. One my vet stabilized him and had 2 IV's lines running strong, we slung the IV bag over my shoulder and off my pup and I headed for the major animal hospital for direct admission. We were very fortunate...praise the Lord. |
I am so glad h e is home and feeling better. My Cali had that last year. It does come on so quickly, with bloody diahrea and vomiting. he started to have another episode a month or so later, I could tell by the look in her eyes she was sick again. I took her in and when the vet pulled out the thermometer it had blood on it. She said we caught it right in time. She was given meds and fluids and recovered pretty quickly the 2nd time. I suspected that the hooves I was giving them was making her sick, so I stopped giving them hooves. Then a couple of weeks ago, as a treat for Pixie's freedom from LP confinement, I bought them all hooves. Sure enough 2 days later Cali had diahrea, so no more hooves for them. |
Yes, I have heard about several that had it and it was not diganosed correctly. Here is a link with a little information about it. CANINE HEMORRHAGIC GASTROENTERITIS, HGE |
Thanks for the warning. I'm so glad your little guy is OK. |
So glad yr baby will be ok & you got him the help he needed. Thanks for sharing about HGE with us. I had not heard of this before. Get well little Guy! |
