Liver Shunt Diet?? My little Yorkie Boy 15 months old and just got diagnosed with a liver shunt. They did the full bloodwork and his ammonia levels are really high. They put him on Hills U/D food and lactulose 3 times a day. I have heard that Hills is not that great either? Previously he was on Blue Buffalo food with Dinovite supplements. I hear a raw food diet might help. Can anyone tell me what foods to feed him or what recipes to help his liver heal? I want to do everything I can to help him avoid surgery. The vet wants to work on diet first, then surgery last. Please help!!!! |

I'm no vet but I waited to have my Mia's surgery done trying to do the diet and lactulose thing and decided to have the shunt surgery several months later and she did well after the surgery for over a year although she still had to be on the diet and on lactulose. I'm NOT trying to upset you but I would go ahead and have the surgery ASAP I think she would still be with me if I had done the surgery earlier. She had other issues also but the longer you wait (unless she is different from Mia) the sicker your baby will become. The meds and diet are not a cure. I suggest that you go to the University of Tennesse web site and look and the information on liver shunts. Good luck. I will keep you in my prayers. |

A lot of dogs with liver shunt or Microvascular dysplasia (MVD - microscopic shunting) eat the Hill's L/D diet. The U/D diet is a bladder stone diet (many dogs with shunts also have bladder stones) but also has restricted protein. Dogs with liver problems generally do worse on things like red meat. My dog (who has MVD) cannot eat meat at all or she becomes very ill. We feed a home cooked vegetarian diet. Many dogs with MVD or Liver shunt also use Silymarin (milk thistle) to help protect the liver. You should ask your vet about the use of milk thistle as it has been shown to help regenerate the liver. I would pursue a surgical consult if this were my dog to see if this were an option. |

Go get your baby operated on while she's able to have surgery. ;) |
