Benadryl to calm pet Today Ruger got nicked at the groomers very close to his eye. I took him to the vet and he's okay, but I did ask about how to calm him the next time he goes. The vet recommended 1/4 tab of Benadryl. I have a script for Lorazapam, and was wondering if that would be a better med for him. Any thoughts? |
I would use rescue remedy for dogs- it's all natural- lorazapan is strong for a dog in my opinion- rescue remedy for dogs is amazing and calming- i would prefer that over anything else- even benadryl- do you trust this groomer? Why did that happen? Poor baby :( I hope he feels better |
If you decide to go the benadryl route, make sure you try it on your dog first. Some get a paradoxical reaction and end up very hyper from it. |
I used to give Wobie a low dose of tranquilizer given to me by my vet for Wobie's grooming. He was really bad at the groomers and it made me feel horrible seeing him like that. After several times using the meds, he improved enough to be groomed without them. Maybe you could experiment with tiny doses and see what works. |
I wish Toby would take calming treats or Rescue Remedy. I've tried both and he wants nothing to do with either one. I even took a calming treat and wrapped it in a Greenie pill pocket. He ate the pill pocket and left the treat! He is getting a bit better at the groomer's so maybe he'll outgrow the fidgety stage when at the groomer. |
Several years back my vet gave me valium for my boy. He has never once been to the groomers, I do it, but I cannot cut his nails, trim his feet or anywhere around his face. He freaks out and I get very afraid he will bite me (although if he did, I doubt it would be too hard). Even on the valium, he still freaked out and I couldn't get anywhere near his feet. I gave up on that as why drug him when it made no difference anyways? The vets office does trim his nails for me ($18) and they tell me he is so quite and such a good boy for them :mad: |

Aww poor baby. I don't have any thing else to offer that hasn't already been said. Just wishing you good luck. If you like the groomer and she does a good job keep her accidents do happen on occasion. |
My vet told me to give my boys 2ml children's benedryl for when they fly (they fly with me across the country in a bag under my seat sometimes) to calm them. It does work, you need very little of it. She did specify CHILDRENS though, not infant and not regular adult formula. I don't remember why though. |

For those who use it, how much Rescue Remedy are you giving your Yorkie? Searching the net tells me to just squeeze a dropper full in his mouth, or 3 to 4 drops on a treat. What confuses me is that 4 drops is the adult dose for a person. Thanks for all the good replies and concerns. |
I had an IG rescue that was 13 yrs old when I got her. I don't know if she was a biter before I got her, but within a week of having her, she had very extensive surgery to remove a huge tumor in her ear. I know it was painful, but it was emergency surgery. On top of her owner having passed. Her ear was basically removed. Anyway, she would not let me do her nails, would try to bite the vets, and anyone but myself who tried to handle her. I started wrapping her head in a towel. I would fold a bath towel in half and wrap that around her head. She would then let me dremel her nails. I had this girl for four years until she passed a year and a half ago. |
I forgot to add that my vet now uses towels with pets that are likely to bite with great success. Both dogs and cats. It is a lot less traumatic than trying to wrestle the dog! |
