Best dry food??? I have four 11 week old yorkie pups and a 3 year old yorkie. After trying everything I finally got Taste of the Wild which my 3 year old yorkie loves! The pups have been eating Royal Canin Puppy 33 since before I got them which they seem to like it just fine. However they have diarrhea and ALWAYS act like they are hungry. They get into Abby's Taste of the Wild we she doesn't finish it all but I don't think that is what is causing the diarrhea because it has been going on since I got them. I thought it was caused by rawhide chews because I had gave them some Dingos which they completely ate, but they haven't had them in about a week and no change in the poop. =( They have been wormed and seen by the vet who can't find any reason for the diarrhea. I was thinking about switching them to Nutro Natural Choice but I didn't see a lot on here about it. I was just wondering what everyone thought of it or if anyone knew anything to stop the diarrhea (which is some days more like a paste)? |
I wouldn't give your dogs rawhides. They are not fully digestible and reportedly make a mess of the digestive system. Switch to full-digestible chews. My boys' favorites are Merrick Wishbones, Texas Toothpicks, and Himalayan Chews. I would strongly advise against feeding any Nutro products. If your pups have been checked by the vet, I would try another food. |

I agree stay away from Nutro Products. |

Bully sticks are a great chew for your pup, but just make sure you don't get the stinky ones! Ask the question "best dry food?" and you'll probably get 100 different answers. :D:p Google "Nutro Consumer Affairs" and you will probably see why people don't like it. :) My personal opinion is that, as of right now, Acana and Orijen (both made by Champion Pet Foods) is some of the best kibble out there. However, there are many great foods such as Fromm, Go!, Now!, Nature's Variety, etc. Overfeeding is often a cause of runny stool or diarrhea, esp. if they switched from RC to TOTW without a slow transition. High quality foods require less food. For instance, I feed my 15lb active boy 1/2 cup of Acana Grasslands per day, mixed in with some wet food. |
Would it be bad for them to just eat the Taste of the Wild? I know it has a higher protein content than a lot of puppy foods and they don't make a specific puppy formula. |
In my experience to much protein can cause diarrhea. Our Maggie who is very sensitive does best with Orijen Adult dog food and our puppy (6 1/2 months) eats that too with a great appetite. Orijen has puppy food too I believe... |

I've since switched food and am now feeding Acana, but TOTW is a good quality food IMO. |
If they have had loose stool for a week I think I would contact your vet. It could be a form of E-Coli or something. |
I use Wellness Small breed...I love it and so do my babies. :) |
I feed Wellness Small Breed! Mocha loves it! |
I finally found one he likes Woody was really sick when he was a baby. He had giarrdia when I got him and I didn't know. They can test for it at the vet. Since then he has recovered but always had a sensitive stomach and is a very pick eater. Finally we tried Before Grain Buffalo. Woody is highly allergic to grain products but Before Grain is highly nutritious and not extremily expensive. They also sell sample pack size foe 3 or 4 dollars. |
I would recheck your puppies stools. They could very easily have either giardia or coccidiousis. Both are hard to pick up on stool samples and are often missed. The coccidia especially can kill pups if the diarreha becomes to bad. |
I recently started Royal Canin yorkie pup formula. It seemed Mia was getting so very picky. This has something she actually likes. If it isn't chicken not worth the time in her min.... She becomes like the taz devil when she smells chicken. Just amazing. BUT so far Canin yorkie has been good for her. |
Personally, I'd run from Royal Canin... that's what Harley was on, and his litter mates and the breeder's other dogs had some horrible problems on it... I'm on NOW! puppy, and it's wonderful. Also Natural Balance makes great food as well. |
