Why is his urine so strong? Rocco's urine is very dark yellow (has been for about a month or more now) and smells very strong, much like cat urine. He is 7.5 months old, and is eating a drinking seemingly well. Is this normal? |
I would call the vet just to double check. |
When males start to mark their urine smells different...almost skunk like at times. At his age this might be what it is but you should check with your vet just to be sure. |
He did just see the vet on Thursday for pre-neuter bloodwork, but of course I forgot to ask about it. He has been marking a LOT lately (luckily only outside so far). I will call the vet tomorrow to run it by him...I hope I'm only being a neurotic mommy and he'll tell me it's normal ;). |

Yes, it should. I got Peanut at 2 years old and had him neutered and he no longer marks and his urine has no strong odor. But, since he got neutered so late he does want to mark if there is another in tact male in my house (like the little stray that stayed with us) but other than that he doesn't mark. Having your little guy neutered at this age should take care of all of that. |

Oops - double post |
Are you using belly bands with him? That will help a great deal...then even if he does lift his leg he won't be able to leave his scent to go back to later. |
Not using belly bands. I thought those were only for older intact males that start marking in the house. Do you think he'll need them even after he's neutered if I've not had a problem yet? (He's going this Friday) |
If you are having good luck house training him and you are happy with those results then I wouldn't worry about it. Belly bands can be used for any males that want to mark or pee in the house, for house training purposes, for visiting somewhere that you don't want to take the chance of an accident...etc... I've used them with all of my males (with the exception of my first male but he didn't need them) and they are great. |
I'd get him neutered ASAP. Males make CHARMING PETS...but if they're not neutered nature will cause all sorts of problems. The strong urine smell and marking everywhere are two of them. |
