How old is too old for teeth cleaning My girls are 10 and 14 years old. My vet wants them to get their teeth cleaned yearly. I worry about anesthesia, especially for my 14 year old. I haven't had hers cleaned in almost 3 years. I use several dental products for her and try to keep them as clean as I can on my own. At her age, I don't want to be aggressive with things like anethesia unless she needs surgery. What do you guys think? What have your vets recommended? |

I know how you feel, I have a 14 year old, too. I'm worried she couldn't take the anesthesia, either. |
Age isn't a disease, so theoretically they will be fine if precautions are taken (preop bloodwork, etc.). I'd be nervous too though. Is your vet sure that they need it? If extensive home care is going on, then they may not. If there is a lot of tartar build-up, then it is likely in their best interest to have it done. |
I had my Holly who was a 4l# Maltese cleaned every year until she passed away at 16. She was in good health until about 2 weeks before she died. |
Lady is 14 and my vet stopped doing her dentals a few years ago. She has other health issues, though. Are her teeth in really bad shape? If they are, they could cause heart problems and other health issues. If they are not that bad, I personally wouldn't risk it. |
