Swollen belly??! My 12 week old puppy (Bentley) seems to have a swollen belly tonight. I dont know if maybe he just ate too much or what but its freaking me out of course like every little thing with him does. Does anyone know what else could cause this or do y'all think he just ate a bit too much? I give him about 1/4 a cup 3 times daily but I dont know if thats right. It sounds like a bit much. He doesnt usually eat it all but he ate the entire 1/4 at lunch. He is acting normal. Still playing and rough housing with his brother (Charlie). He is being treated for coccidia right now if that matters. And he is probably about 2 pounds by now. |
BUMP! What are you feeding him? 1/4 cup sounds like a lot, but it might not be much if it's low quality food. The higher the quality the less you give per serving. |
What type of food? Harley is 9 months maybe 3.5 lbs and he only eats 1/4 cup of kibble a day, and some times he doesn't even eat that much.. plus he gets a small spoon of wet... (he's on a high quality grain free kibble) That seems like a lot of food for a little dog. Even when Harley was on Royal Canin before switching to a higher quality food, he didn't eat that much. Let us know what you're feeding... we can have a better idea of what would help. |
It was Beneful. Yeah, not so great. But today I went and got Natural Choice Small Breed Puppy. I know thats better than Beneful but I dont know if thats a pretty good food or not. I read the ingredients and it seemed a lot better though. This morning his belly was normal again. Im gonna start switching him to the new food today. I agree, it does sound like a lot. Especially considering he was weighed today and is only 1.75lbs. So 1/4 three times a day is a lot. A whole lot. Hopefully he will like this food and Ill give him 1/4 for the whole day. Is Natural Choice a good food? |
I've never used it... but if I found the right website... it looks good to me. You are right... Beneful isn't the best... you should notice a big change. just remember to switch slowly. |
I had this happen to my littlest one about 2 months ago. He's only 3 lbs and I swear I could see his belly getting bigger and bigger. I called the Vet and after confirming that he is moving his bowels and no other symptoms are happening, she pretty much told me he has gas. :D He was allowed 1/4 of a Tums tablet. I got him to eat it, and his little belly went down in a flash.:) |
1/4 3x a day seems like a lot. I feed my 10lb dog about 3/4-1 cup of Canidae a day (1/2 cup 2x a day, but I lessen the amount if she eats other things like eggs, etc.). It is probably overfeeding or gas at this point. If it doesn't resolve itself soon then I would go see a vet. |
He is actually there right now bc he had a reaction to his DHPP vaccine. He went into shock and needed oxygen! He is up and alert now but still very scary. So when I go back today to pick him up and discuss that, I may bring up his belly too. However I do think it is from overfeeding. He is just so tiny and I am not at all used to it. The smallest dog Ive ever owned is almost 20lbs. So Im trying to adjust. Im hoping the better food will help. |

Hope your little one is feeling better. It doesn't hurt to ask the vet. I would also ask about the food you are going to switch him to... not all vets give a great response to this, but it doesn't hurt to ask. Just tell them that you want to feed something higher quality... no corn, no fillers, etc. I've seen vets that promote the crappy food (which annoys me), in my experience it's better to as a nutritionalist than a vet when it comes to food questions. But maybe I've just had my share of crappy vets over the years. Give your little one a kiss from us, when he gets home from the doctor! |
