Gunky eye discharge. How to clean? My little Prince Skip seems to always have this gunky discharge in his eyes. I mean it's constantly. I have to clean his little eyes at least 3-4 times a day. 1. Is it due to his long hair around his eyes? 2. Is it that he may have an eye infection? 3. Can this be an early sign of cataract? Please help. Id like to see what my options are before I take him to the vet. |

Eye gunk is a everyday battle for us. I try to keep his hair short around his eyes. I use flushable baby wipes to clean the gunk out. :) |
Jackson still gets little eye crusties, as I call them, that I clean out every morning. But he had a time when they were nasty, runny, goopy, wet, etc and it was a pain in the butt to clean every morning... once I switched foods, it was gone! So food can be a part of it, as well as environmental allergies. |

I've been cutting them for a while but I've had enough. I'm just letting it grow now, which is a process, and I'm hoping they'll be long enough soon that I can just comb back with the rest of his hair. :) |
I originally wanted to just let it grow out myself. Hes only 12 weeks so maybe I will do that instead and hopefully he grows out of it. So far it does not seem to bother him.:aimeeyork |
eye crustys I have had the same problem as well about the eye gunk, but i guess not as bad as you guys. I recently read that the food really does have alot to do with it . my Bella eats royal canine and her eye crustys are not a problem at all she gets them once in a while the other readers have said that when they switched dog food the eye gunk got really bad , but when they went back to royal canine it just went away they couldn't belive it. so i'm a true beliver i've learned so much since i became a member of YT I don't know what I would of done thanks so much everyone for all the great info:) |
the very best thing to use to get the gunk away from the eyes is a knit (sp?) comb. it's a very fine tooth small comb usually used for combing out lice (yuck). Try it. It works great. |
My 3 also had alot of eye boogies but I changed their food and it got a lot better |
Just passing on a little tip - for cutting around their eyes get one of those tiny eyebrow trimmers you see everywhere. They are like $10 and work great!! plus you can't cut them with it, you can put your finger on it - nothing. It's wonderful for little places like paw pads, ears, sensitive areas and when it gets dull throw it away and get another one. |
Tatiana has some crust around her eyes in the morning when she gets up (so do I, for that matter :)). I clean her eyes after her breakfast as a routine. I wet my index finger and thumb, and very gently rub the fur in the inner corners of her eyes, and around her eyes, until the crust is gone. Then I use a wash cloth and gently dab her eyes dry. Also, before her weekly bath, I do a touch-up on her haircut. I trim down the hair that grows into her eyes. |
It sounds like you problem is worse than normal crusties, and it could be a food allergy. My foster has morning crusty eyes, but nothing too bad, and I started growing out the hair around the eyes instead of cutting them weekly like her previous owner did. The crusties are so much better, some days there's no crusty at all, and it use to be we had to soak in warm water every morning before removing, now I can just wipe with my finger. My theory is even though they were cut once a week, there was always something poking the eye, and it's better to just let them grow out. If there is actual brown goop and it’s wet all the time, I’d look at the food, has he always been this way? You might want to get it checked by a vet, and make sure there's not an infection. Does it smell funny? |
The best thing that I ever did was grow out the hair around their eyes. We went from horrible eye drainage and tear stains to NOTHING! It was he!! for a while but now both Pebbles and Bogey have beautiful clean eyes. I have not had to clean eye gook for some time. I do keep Doodlebugs eye hair trimmed but he had never had am eye gunk problem. Try growing out the eye hair and also take a look at the food like Nancy suggested. |
