Reverse Sneeze
 
Hi all,

I read an older post on reverse sneezing, but I'm a wee bit paranoid, so I'm going to ask just to be sure (I had a horse with SEVERE COPD before I got my Yorkie).

He reverse sneezed when he's anxious and excited. it sounds horrible, but I've seen that this is normal at times. He's only 9 months.

My breeder who was also a horse person kind of explained that sometimes they can learn the reverse sneeze from others (kind of like cribbing for any horse people) We talked about it a while back so I dont even know if I have my facts straight above so please set me straight if I'm wrong (she's really pregnant and I don't want to bother her, hence my asking here) ... anyways my point being he hasn't seen any other dogs doing it.

Can the reverse sneeze do any damage? Like with horses, if you exercise while a horse coughs it an cause COPD down the road.

If it's goign to drive me nutts is it worth the $45 check up? Just to have peace of mind?

Can I prevent him from doing it?

Sounds like it could be a symptom of a collapsed trachea. I'm not 100% sure though. I've read some info on collapsed trachea, and the reverse sneeze could be a sign of it. You should get a second opinion if you want peace of mind.

Yeah I think I'm going to bring him in for a check up, I need to go buy some wormer anyway.

One of my 1 yr. old pups gets reverse sneeze when she eats too fast or gets too excited (sometimes after eating). I don't believe it does any permanent damage, but is sort of sad to watch as they go thru the honking spasms, and people who don't know what is happening think they are choking. There are a couple methods that seem to help them stop during an episode, including holding them and lifting the chin while gently stroking/massaging the neck, or a new trick I learned is to put a dot of peanut butter in their mouth (or other food), and the licking & chewing changes the configuration of the throat so the spasm stops.

My big boy booboo gets the reverse sneeze also but I have noticed if I distract him like I grab one of his toys especially any kind of ball he completely stops the reverse sneezing and focuses on the ball.
