IMO, if a dog has had surgery, esp. a spay when talking about s/n, it is much safer to have them home than not monitored at all. Between the anesthesia still wearing off and pain meds given (both can cause reactions), the incision just being closed (a few dogs can get at it through their e-collars and many more can scratch it), the risk of bleeding, the possibly of vomiting, etc. I could never and would never leave my dog alone. I am much more confident in my ability to monitor a dog post-op than I am leaving it where nobody can even hear it cry. I really wish this practice was stopped. There are hundreds to thousands of 24 hour vets in the US, so if they need to stay overnight, that's where they should be... |

How's your little one today? |

Eating normally, drinking normally. It's like he never had the surgery! The vet told me to limit his physical activity of course. But I turn away for one second, and he's running up & down the stairs :p I was told to apply a cold compress to bring down the swelling. But otherwise, he's great! |
My first dog, Freeway, had major surgery for an anal gland tumor. The vet insisted he stay overnight. I was young, so it was up to my parents... I asked if someone was going to be there overnight and was told no, it was more to keep him calm and quiet. He stayed overnight (came home with fleas too, poor dog), and was terrified when we picked him up that morning. He had never, ever spent a night alone before that, and he most certainly did not need to be alone after such a major surgery. I would have never allowed it. Mya was spayed a few weeks ago, my vet does not keep them overnight. It's up to the owners to ensure that the dog stays quiet. I sent Oliver to a friends house, cleared my schedule, and sat the whole night with Mya on my lap, petting her and telling her it was ok. She did not deal well, but we got through it and she's all healed now. If they had said she needed to stay overnight, I would have said forget it. They got enough of my $$$, and Mya just wanted her momma. To the OP - glad you're little one is doing ok! Even minor surgery is scary, at least now it's behind you both! |
