What do you do when they are so picky they barely eat? My baby Iggy that I adopted this week is the pickiest dog I've ever delt with. He is so skinny and not because his previous owner didn't feed him. The only thing I have been able to get him to eat without any trouble were french fries (hardly any good for either of us). I was given half a bag of the dog food he was being fed (Beniful, which he hates) and I've been mixing it in with the solid gold that my other dog loves. He barely touches it. Tonight I tried cooking for him and he ate a little bit of it but only if I was feeding it to him out of my hand. What is going on here? |
Hi, How old is Iggy? Is he a yorkie too? |
Ugh, the page was not loading so it posted three times! Sorry! Iggy is a six year old Yorkie. He's very tiny. Three pound range. |
Beneful is a horrible dog food. A dog nutritionist told me that the cheap supermarket foods are basted in sugar, the dogs get addicted to the sugar and the sweet taste, just like kids with sugar cereal. So that when you try and change them to a good food, they don't want to eat it because there is no sweet taste. If he is not a puppy you might want to put a little cottage cheese mixed with the solid gold to get him to start eating. Or boil some chicken and add it in with the solid gold. |
I have to put parmesean cheese on my girls kibble as she has started not eating again. Generally works pretty good. Be careful about the junk food or your dog won't want to go back to the dog food. You can also crumble a bit of scrambled egg on the food - that works good as well. |
Our home is vegetarian so most of these things we don't have. I may have to suck it up and buy some eggs and cottage cheese : ( I'm hoping that tomorrow if I add some nutritional yeast to his food it will be stinky enough to eat. We have a really great pet store here that gave me a whole bag full of different premium pet food samples to give him. How much do these little guys normally eat? I feel like my mini poodle, who is at a perfect weight, eats so much more! |

does he like chicken? you can boil some chicken breast and put it in the blender with a little bit of water, and then mix the chicken paste with his current dog food. |
I replied on one of your other threads  I wanted to ask is he active or does he act lethargic specially in the mornings? Did you ask them why he was underweight or if he has been seen by a vet about his weight and appetite? See if you can get his medical records send to your vet to review. |
Try some cheese mixed in with his food (shredded ones are usually good, like cheddar or mozzarella) or plain low-fat/non-fat yogurt. |
