Is heartworm medicine necessary? I have Advantage-Multi that is a 6 month supply but I didn't put it last month because of how she reacted to the first time I used it. I posted about her before and to reiterate she just basically went hysterical and acted really weird and trying to rub off where I put the medicine and sliding along walls. This happened for an hour or so. I called the vet and the receptionist told me that it was normal because its something odd for her to feel but everything is fine. A YTer told me to try putting water on her back to see if she acted the same but she didn't act weird. I really don't know wht to think. The vet office said it was normal, but when the vet put it on her the first time, she didn't act weird. When I did it the first time, she acted weird, but I am pretty sure I applied it correctly. I just really want to know if its necessary to use heartworm medicine. |
Depends on your area. It is considered necessary in a lot of places although some disagree. Howver, it is not necessary to use this drug. |
If you have mosquitos you need it. Heartworm is a very painful disease to have and its hard to treat |
The benefits well outweigh the risks. I give both of mine heartworm medication but I live in Florida. Perhaps try a different method such as the chewable pill. Its flavored so they think its a treat! |
Switch to a pill, like Sentinel. |
I use Sentinel for Rosie. We had a beagle get heartworms and it is an awful thing for them to go through. Believe me you don't want your baby to get it. Also, the treatment is very very expensive. And to be honest, our beagle was never the same. Sentinel is a chewable pill and it also helps with the flea population. |
What does your vet advise? If heartworm isn't a problem in your area, you may not need a preventative. |
