Bailey was given the wrong medication! Bailey got another infection in his penis where green pus was leaking out, so I called the vet and asked them to prescribe him some antibiotic. They said sure and to come pick it up. I had already started to flush his penis twice a day but with green pus I wanted him on an antibiotic just to be safe. So I went and picked it up last night and gave it to him and then again this morning. Through the night last night he had the runs and he's been very lathargic. I could tell he has been not feeling well. So I went and checked the medication. The outside of his meds said that he's supposed to be getting 62.5mg every 12 hours but the foil pkg the medication sits in said that it was 125mg... I called the vet and they asked me to bring the medication back in and I also brought Bailey in. They gave Bailey a shot of pepcid to help calm his tummy and Metranidazole to be given with the Clavamox since it's known to upset the GI track anyway. They obviously didn't charge me for the vet visit or the replacement meds but what an ordeal for me and my baby!!!! He looks so sad and like he's not feeling well. :( I hate seeing him sick!!! |
That terrible!! I hope he is feeling better soon! |
Awww.....I'm so sorry to hear about your ordeal and I hope your little one is feeling better. Was it's the vets fault you recieved the wrong meds? and what caused the green pus to begin with? just curious because I have 2 males.....Hope all is well now. |

That's horrible! I hope he feels better really soon. Can I ask how you think he got an infection? Does Bailey have a pee string or is his hair cut short? I'm sorry to ask questions. I'm starting to think I shouldn't leave a pee string on Kaji, but I'm afraid this will leave his Peeper exposed and prone to infection. |
The infection is from is hair on his penis being too long or if bacteria somehow gets in his mouth and then he licks his penis it can cause and infection... Yes it was the vets fault the wrong meds were given. They prescribed 62.5mg and GAVE 125mg... now he has the right meds. |

I've never had a problem with a long pee string on my boys - something to think about I guess! I do clip it but not short and I do clean the area daily. That is so upsetting, poor Bailey I hope he feels better soon. |
I never cleaned it daily BUT I will now and I always kept him long down there too. Can you imagine if I hadn't noticed that he was getting double the meds???? OMG I start tearing up just thinking about it! Quote:

As for the vet - OMG is right - How stupid can they be! |
Your baby So sorry to hear about that med error. Hopefully, the extra amount helped instead of hindered. Have you ever given BeneBac or probiotics when you give antibiotics? I have found that giving the good bacteria helps prevent diarrhea when any antibiotic is given even in the correct dose. Of course, discuss with your vet first. |
Hi, Welcome to YT! Yes he takes probiotics, bioliv and sinovi granuels everyday. Bailey actually has Chronic Pancreatitis and IBD, so I have to keep him on the supplements at all times... :) I've also given him so pumpkin to help settle his tummy. I just can't wait for him to feel better!!!! Quote:

That's a great idea!!!! Quote:

Mercy me! A sub vet made the same mistake with my Cocoa. Since I knew what she was getting I caught it before I gave it to her. Get well wishes to your little Bailey. Quote:

What is a "pee string"?? |
It's the hair that hangs off the end of the penis and kind gathers in a string when it gets wet. |
So if I read the OP right, it's not that he was given the wrong medicine, but that you were supposed to give him 1/2 of the pill every time (62.5 mg is half of 125 mg). This is a good reminder for everyone to look at your prescriptions and ask questions about how much/ how often before you leave your vets office. That goes for the pharmacy with your meds, too. |
I hope Bailey feels better soon. I am so glad you noticed the error. |

Well yes I could give him 1/2 of a pill but them i'm giving him 2 extra weeks worth of meds. The box said that I should give him 1 pill every 12 hours, not 1/2 a pill. I didn't go to the vet for the meds, I just picked up his meds from the vet. I called because I already knew what was wrong. No it wasn't the wrong medicine but yes he was given the wrong dosage. I felt it was important for the vet to know what had happened. This is a good reminder to double check all meds before administering. Quote:

Thank you Rhetts Mama for explaining what a "pee string" is. I had never heard of that. |
Bailey is very lathargic still but at least he's starting to drink water now! Quote:

That's what I hoped it was too. I was trying to give them the benefit of the doubt (hoping it was mislabeled) but it wasn't. That's a good idea tho about getting a larger dosage and dividing it. This was a big lesson to me to watch all meds CLOSELY! They were very apologetic to me and very good about everything, I just hope this reminds THEM too to be more careful! Quote:

Update Well Bailey is feeling much better today. He did have the runs again through the night last night and a sick tummy too but when we woke up for work this morning he had a normal stool  He was also a lot more peppy today then the last two days!!! I am a bit disappointed that the vet didn't call to check on him since it was their mistake. They usually call after a vet visit and there was no call at all this time. :( Oh well.... At least my baby is feeling back to himself. Now to just get his pee pee back to normal again... Quote:

Glad to hear Bailey is doing better. :) |
