Retained Puppy Teeth After Neuter
 

Hey everyone! Hopefully someone can help answer my question. My yorkie was neutered 3 weeks ago. At that time he was 6 months old. I am was so nervous and was fretting the idea of having him put under. Because of this, I talked to my vet about pulling his baby teeth during the neutering for fear he would need some baby teeth extracted in the future. (My older yorkie retained a lot of her teeth and they were pulled at the time of her spaying). The vet said this wasn't a problem and they typically do take out any residual baby teeth at this time, so the puppy doesn''t have to be put under again. After the vet examined my puppy before surgery, he said he would call me if any needed to be taken out because he needed my permission to do so. He did not call and when I picked him up, I was told none had to be extracted. I just looked at his mouth today, and sure enough his front adult teeth have come in and the baby teeth did not fall out. I am really upset because I don't want to put him under again. I feel like this is my fault and I should have pushed harder for his baby teeth to be removed. I didn't because they told me that this was a routine procedure and they would be taken out. I put a call into my vet and am waiting to hear back from him. Should he have taken these teeth out at the time of neuter? I am not sure if the adult teeth were coming up at the time of Romeo's neuter? Should he have taken the baby teeth out even if the adult teeth weren't coming up yet? Could the adult teeth have come up within these weeks or did my vet not even take the time to check his teeth? I am so upset/angry. I requested his remaining baby teeth be pulled at the time of surgery. I know when he calls back, he is going to defend himself and don't want to complain to him if I don't have a case and he did the right thing. Thanks everyone for listening to my rant. :(

I had my yorkie neutered at 7 months and told the vet to remove any baby teeth that hadn't come out yet. I, like you wanted the surgery and teeth removal done at the same time. My personal opinion is that if you told the vet you wanted his baby teeth removed at the time of neutering...I don't know why he didn't do it then. Maybe there is some kind of explanation...I hope others here will give their ideas on this.

I know that is my vet's plan. Rhett is going is in 2 weeks and I don't think he has any baby teeth left. But if he does, she will remove them at the same time.

I got Lizzy when she was nine months old. She had already been spayed, but both her baby canines were still in. She had four canines. I had to have them removed. I know she was six months old when she was spayed, and I don't know why the teeth were left in, unless the adult teeth hadn't come out. My vet had to remove the teeth.

I hope your vet calls you back and explains why he didn't remove the baby teeth. I personally would have waited until 8-10 months to do a neuter, just to give those baby teeth a little more time to fall out. You did nothing wrong. You were a very responsible mommy.

I am very interested to hear what the explaination of your vet will be as to why they were not removed. :confused:

My baby had her baby teeth and her adult teeth canines in at the same time justt wo weeks ago- like on top of eachother. but they both fell out on their own. Maybe the vet thinks yours will do the same?

Claire is going to get her baby teeth extracted...she was spayed 2 months ago...how was the process for your dog?

My Max is 3 yrs old. We had him neutered when he was 7 months old. They did pull what baby teeth he had left at that time but guess what.... :D yep - one (in the front) came in afterwards. :eek: We've taken extra care brushing it and decided to just have it removed when he goes for his 1st dental - which should be in Sept.

Just try to keep them really clean and tarter free until you have his dental done. :thumbup:

We are seen a lot of this happening in our area. The vets are refusing to remove retained baby teeth during the spay/neuter in order to require a different separate procedure 4 months later. For me the only explanation is that it is a money making tool. A puppy owner called me another day reporting the same complain about the BANFIELD in Everett , the vet did not want to pull the baby teeth because it would be "too big of a procedure" and obviously we all know that pulling 3 retained baby teeth is nothing when they are under anesthesia. The cost now to remove the remained baby teeth is exactly the same of a spaying ... People are cutting corners in this economy and for my understanding some vets are just taking advantage of the responsible new owners to keep their business going.
