Need Advice:14 week old 2.2 lb yorkie puppy not eating very much I am thinking of purchasing a 14 week old yorkie puppy who has not been eating too much. The breeder is concerned, and told me to buy A D food and gastro med cam from the vet to have on hand in my home (nutrocal too). Also, she said she has to coax the puppy to eat all day. She will eat a bit of chicken and hamburger mixed with rice. She is small, but is this normal for a puppy this age to not eat? I called the vet and they told me that she should be eating normally on her own. I really want to have this puppy, but I do want to have a healthy and happy puppy. Would appreciate any info or recommendations. |

This way both of you can be there and you will see each other asking questions to the vet. If by than you feel comfortable you can judge if the best will be for you to get him or not. This is common in yorkies... I brought Izzy home at 13 weeks and we too had a very hard time with her eating... I went as far as to buying baby food....like chicken, beef, and those meat sticks to get her to eat...I always amde sure that i had nutrical on hand at all time... I would feed her wet food also to make sure she was getting enough water... I'm not sure what the breeder is feeding the puppy.... I would get a good HIGH grade food.... Something like wellness puppy wet food... see how she does...and remember that their tummy's are very small so a teaspoon at a time is all they may eat..every 1 hour or so... izzy is now almost 9 month old and she still gives me fits about eating... Oh and she also loved the New balance dog food roll... |
My Tinkerbell was very picky also and didn't seem to be eating what I thought was enough. Part of this was just me not being used to how little a 2.5 pound puppy can eat at one time, but I also think she didn't really care much for the kibble. I switched her over to NV raw and for the first time she is cleaning her bowl right away. I would maybe try some different foods and see if your pup like them better. |
Mia is very picky about her food. She really gets like the tazmanian devil when she knows there is chicken in the room! You would have never guessed at that point a 1# ball of fur could get so out of control. But to this day she adores little tidbits of chicken and if I need her to eat kibble when we are traveling I stop and get grilled chicken strips and tear a bit off and just rub it through the kibble. Wa la I have a yorkie actually eating what a yorkie should. |
I have a 14 week old puppy too and he is SOO picky! My vet told me he was a little underweight about 2 weeks ago since he's still not 2 pounds yet and that really worried me so I changed his food from Eucanuba to Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul dry puppy food....he LOVES it! It was such an instant change and it even cleared up the tears and gunk he would sometimes get in his eyes. Also I don't think he would eat much because he gets so excited and follows me around everywhere (forgetting to go eat) so I found that using his kibble to teach him obedience skills like sit, laydown, etc. got him to eat a lot more. Not sure if this helps but I know it helped with mine! Just make sure to always have nutrical on you at all times just in case :) Good luck! |
