Anxiety or something else? I have had Diamond for a year now (she was a year old in February). In the past couple of months she has begun to shake badly and pant to the point of drooling when she is nervous or over excited. Does anyone else have/had this problem with their Yorkie? If so, what can I do to help her? |
Welcome to YorkieTalk. I know that some members on YT use anti-anxiety meds.....most herbal. Hopefully someone will answer your question. You could do a YT google search down below, just make sure that you click on the YorkieTalk button. Good luck. ~Joanne~ |
Welcome to YT. :) Has Diamond had a recent checkup with the vet? I would rule out any health problems first. |
Yes, Diamond has been to the vet and is a healthy puppy! |
That is good. Does she do this inside, or just outside? Could it be heat stress? If it is occurring inside, what kinds of things precipitate this behavior? For instance, does she do it when she is playing, waiting for food, or when you have a visitor to your home? |
In the car is the most consistent place she does it. I put on the a/c to rule out her being hot. The other times could be inside or outside, but it's when a lot of people are around and giving her attention. I think she gets over excited and then becomes anxiety? I'm not sure, but it's when there is a lot going on. I travel to Pittsburgh often (which is 2.5 hours from me) and I always take her with me. Should i ask the vet for a mild sedative for her on these longer trips? |
I posted to you on the other thread ideas for possibly making car rides more enjoyable. Personally, I prefer to leave sedatives as a last resort, but many people here have used them with great success, including exhibitors. There is a thread in this section about Rescue Remedy. Another thought for the car -- is Diamond sitting in the sun? Even with a/c, sitting in the sun can be hot. If you don't have tinted windows, consider getting the shades with suction cups for the windows that may affect where your dog is sitting. What kind of car seat do you use? Or do you use a crate in the car? For anxiety/excitement around people, more socialization. That is what I'm working on with my boys. |
I don't use a car seat. I have a little seat belt for her. I fold my passanger seat down to get my wheelchair in, and set it in the back seat, and she sits on top of the seat (with it folded down) with her seat belt on. Sometimes that doesn't work though and she sits on my lap while I drive. |
For Diamond's safety and yours, I would advise against driving with her on your lap, even if she seems to be calmer being close to you. The seatbelt is great and probably safer than a doggy seat, so I'm going to contradict myself and say try a Snoozer doggy car seat. It has a harness holder and many YT members have had remarkable success with these seats calming their dogs. (I have the Petgear booster and I am thinking about trying the Snoozer for my younger boy). Some people argue that the safest way to transport is in a crate. I used one for Max for a long distance trip and it did calm him. He doesn't like to be crated in the house alone, but he did find comfort in it in the car. |
