Benadryl vs Zyrtex In your opinion, which is more effective, Benadryl or Zyrtex for allergies? Mocha has been on Benadryl twice a day for about 2 months. I recently switched to Zyrtex becasue its only given once a day and last for 24 hours and it covers indoor and outdoor allergies. I'm considered about the long term effects of both of the meds. Any thoughts . . . ? |
Correction Sorry, concerned not considered, lol! BTW I contacted my vet prior to switching. |
I am curious about this also. Will be watching to see what responses you get:) |
When my Westie has an allergy flare-up - we give him Zyrtek. He just seems to do better on that than the Benadryl. He's four years old and he appears to do just fine on it. He doesn't get it all that often though - mainly when the season changes; early spring and early fall. Lucy has never had either one. |
My Vet derm doesn't hear much success w/ benadryl, but thinks it's worth a try. They also say any anti-hist should be given a 10-14 day trial before evaluating its effect. I actually like Claritin best (also 24 hr med), but so many dogs do great on Zyrtec. Another med that derms recommend is chlor-trimeton (sp?)...but that one has a short half-life similar to benadryl, so I think you have to give it 4x day like the benadryl. I've never had any success w/ benadryl; I use it as a pre-med for vaccinations though :). |
Whats is the dosage per lb for zyrtex. I am taking Jada back to the vet tomorrow. She has had an allergic reaction to new food and is itching so bad she is wearing an e-collar and long sleeves to minimize the damage to her skin and coat. She has scratched her ears and neck so much I can see her scalp in places. It is just tearing me apart to see her in such agony. She was diagnosed last week with yeast infec. in both ears and is on tresaderm for that. I have been doing benadryl for a week now and I can't see any measurable improvement.:( |
My Westie is about 16 lbs now and we give him a whole one. My cousin is a pharmacist and thinks that is a lot - but that is what the vet recommended so he said go ahead. Lucy has never had one and is only 4 lbs so not sure what the dosage would be. |
This is an interesting thread. I've recently tried Benadryl for Cooper and it did absolutely nothing. We just switched over to children's Zyrtec 2 days ago. I was instructed to give him 2.5ml per day or 5ml if that didn't work. It seems to be clearing up his runny nose a lot better than Benadryl but I think it's still too early to tell. Last night we gave him 3ml. It doesn't seem to make him tired at all either and I believe most of his allergy symptoms have stopped. Cooper is 9 pounds. I thought 5ml sounded like a lot because that's an actual children's dose i believe. |

Lady has been on Zyrtec for many years, back before it was popular to prescribe it for dogs. (And when it wasn't generic and cost $85 a bottle!) My vet had to call the NC State Vet school for a recommendation for a non-drowsy antihistamine that was safe for a dog with a laundry list of health issues who was already on many medications. She has had no side effects after all these years. Her dosage is 1/4 pill. She is close to 8 pounds. |

For example, my Wylie takes a pill for hypothyroid. Most humans take a pill for that once a day. Because of the rate at which dogs metabolize this drug, it should be given twice a day, for optimum results. |

Sounds like the Benadryl is not helping at all. |
