What annual health checks should you have the vet do I have been trying to find a post on what annual health checks should be done by your vet. I know there are certain blood tests. I imagine a stool sample to test for parasites? I am sure someone did mention the blood tests to have done, but I just cannot find it. Hope someone can help. |
This is what we do (yearly): Blood panel with CBC T4 (usually) Urinalysis Fecal Heartworm test Titers for parvo and distemper (discontinued this though) |
Thanks so much. What is CBC and T4? |

Thanks again, Crystal. |
Great thread, some also recommend that joints are tested for LP, and teeth are inspected, and a dental cleaning scheduled if necessary. |

I meant lab work. All of the above is done too... |
I will ask for those as well - thanks so much. |

Ellie's distemper titer seems to be chronically low even a year after vaccination. So we were paying for something that told us to vaccinate her for it every other year when I definitely don't believe she needs it that often. We have stopped DHP entirely instead (but I would never tell somebody else they should do that for a healthy doggie). From the research I've seen, I'm okay doing this and her vet is fine with it. So, basically I don't think they give the whole picture, it seemed to be a waste of money for us, and I won't vaccinate her every year or two for this when I know she doesn't need to be even if a titer comes back low. |
At our vet, it is standard to have a yearly heart-worm blood test and since blood is being drawn anyway, I add the Chem 27. It is a little more expensive than a CBC but shows much more than just a CBC will and if anything comes up suspect on a CBC, you'll be paying much more to then have a Chem 27 run. Definitely stool sample and physical exam by vet to look for any abnormalities, check joints, teeth, etc. We don't do any vaccinations other than rabies any longer. I choose not to titer as a low titer does not mean they have low immunity, nor does a booster vaccination mean immunity will increase. And, you should never be vaccinating any dog with chronic, serious health issues (such as my Sissy). |
Thanks for this, Jodie. I hope the Chem 27 is called this over here as I would not know what to say if the vet asked me what it was! LOL! I wondered if you could have a test to see if she has a lack of any vitamin or mineral? I home feed so I would really like to be sure that she is getting all the nutrition she needs. |
More questions! How do you collect a urine sample, as there is no way Tootsy will will urinate into a container of any sort! Also, do you have the Chem 27 instead of the blood panel with CBC? |
Thanks for the info! I was curious about this myself since Jackson is good on vaccines for maybe forever... minus rabies in 3yrs of course. I still wanna get him checked out yearly. |
