What is the best brand PUPPY food & How much should I feed my PUPPY? At the moment I am feeding her Eukanuba puppy. My vet told me to feed her 1/4 a cup 2-3 times a day. As soon as Suki started to get bloated she recommended 1/8 a cup but Suki is hungry all the time, and I don't want to deprive her from food. What should I do? Do you guys have any recommendations on a good healthy brand of dog food or should I just switch to cooking all her foods with human foods? Thanks! |
I have always kept food out at all times for Knox. My vet recommended always having food available to him until he's six months old. My vet recommends Science Diet, but it's just as crappy as the Eukenuba you are feeding. I switched Knox to Blue Buffalo puppy. Now that he's 8 months old, I feed him Taste of the Wild. It may be too rich in protein for a young puppy though. Look at the first ingredient. The first ingredient listed is the main ingredient. It should be meat, not corn. Lots of people here feed grain-free foods. Grain causes lots of dogs to have allergies. Grain-free foods are more expensive, but that is negligible when you are talking about a yorkie. A 15 lbs bag will go bad before you can feed it all. |

I am a supporter of grain-free also!! I fed my puppies from the age of 12 weeks, a raw diet. Primal frozen raw and then some chicken drumsticks when they were old enough and had their permanent teeth in!! |

I'm also a total supporter in grain-free diets. :) Currently, one of the best companies out there, in my opinion, is Champion Pet Foods. They make Orijen and Acana. Orijen has a puppy food, Acana grain-free is all life stages. Also when feeding a better quality food, they are usually eating less food so you end up saving money anyways. Jackson eats 1/4 cup of Acana in the AM and 1/4 cup of Acana in the PM. So 1/2 cup total every day and he is 16lbs. |

We are feeding Dharma Wellness Puppy and she will only eat a few pieces. We hand feed her and even put it in water and she still only takes a few bites. IS this because it's better quality or do we have a picky eater on our hands? :p I was also thinking about feeding her canned in the morning and dry at night. What are your thoughts on this? |
MissOcean, I feed Wellness to my puppy. He eats wet food in the morning 2-3x a week and dry food in the evening all the time. The other 4 days in the morning he eats dry food with a Topper by Wellness called 95%. Mocha can be a picky eater, so on those days I add a few teaspoons of the 95% to the dry food. Just a thought. . . |

I didn't see anything on the wellness site called 95% except the adult canned food. Why don't you feed your puppy the canned food every morning? Is it bad to do that? What about mixing it in with dry?....all new at this! Need some guidance! :-) |

@ MissOcean: To be completely honest, I"m in NO way an expert on this topic or any other puppy or dog related topics. I come to this site to be educated and informed, lol! To answer your question, the can food that I do feed is Wellness Just for Puppy, however I feed the Wellness for Small Breed in the dry formula. I don't recommend feeding adult food until your puppy is much older and/or told to do so by a vet. My puppy will be a year old next month and it was recommended to us to transition to adult dry food earlier than normal. I have to say it was the best advice. The adult formula has a much smaller kibble, so it seems easier for them chew. Since switching to the adult formula Mocha's appetite seems much better. If I remember correctly, its not recommended to feed a lot of wet food because, its too soft and not good for their teeth or jaws. The dry food "helps" with the removal of tartar and plaque on the teeth and exercises the jaw muscle. I feed wet feed 2-3x a week to just change up the routine of dry food. I know that wet food contains a lot of water, so if the lack of drinking enough water is a issue, then wet food might be appropriate. |
