Tail Docking and dew claw removal at 10 weeks plus As some of you know my new baby Sienna (sissy) Has a full tail and dew claws ( due to uneducated breeder ) she has already gotten her dew claw caught multiple times and has had her little tail stepped on repeatedly usually by her 40 pound big sister I know its a bigger procedure after a few days old I would like to get her tail/dews done but im not to sure what to do is sooner better then later? Im scared to do it now cause shes only 2 lbs shes so tiny ide be afraid she wouldnt wake up!! Ide like some facts or suggestions please not comments on the tail being cute or not |
I can't speak to the dew claw issue. Talk with your vet about it. You should definitely leave her tail intact. |
I would think that removing the tail now would be a bit traumatic. She has been using it for a while to express herself and I'm sure she would notice if it was gone. It would require major surgery to remove the tail. I think Sienna is still little and clumsy. With time she can adapt to being around her much bigger sister. Have you considered putting a bell on her when she's around the house? Kaji is 7 lbs, and about a foot tall, and to me he's tiny. Without the bell his paws, and little nubby tail have been accidentally stepped on. Dew claws I think have more validity to being removed. I've seen way to many just dangling by a thread just waiting to get caught on something. I hear that those bleed quite a bit when they are ripped off. You can have the dew claws removed at the same time as her spay. I definitely wouldn't put her under now, especially since removing a dewclaw, or removing the tail isn't a life saving procedure. Just my opinion anyway. |
I agree with the above poster. I would for sure look into the dew claws, but there is no way I would dock her tail. |

I would say absolutely not! Why put her through that?? 10 weeks is too old to do it without putting her under and that just seems silly. Full tails are the best ;):) Jackson has dewclaws and full tail and never once have we had an issue with it. |
The dew claws I would consider having removed if they are causing her problems. At her age I personally would leave he tail alone. |
Many people are against removing the tails and dews nowadays. Personally, I would not do the tail at this age but if the dew claws are causing a lot of problems you could have them removed when she is spayed. |
Just a personal preference here, but I love seeing pics of yorkies with the longer tails. I think it just adds to their personality. If your vet recommends the dewclaw removal, could it be done at the same time as her spay? |
Personally wouldn't put a 2 pound, 10 week old under anesthesia for elective surgery (including spay). I'd wait awhile. Dews can be done at that time (hopefully no major injuries happen before then). The tail is a bit more major and probably is not the best choice for her health (more time under anesthesia for something cosmetic). But if she is continuously going through trauma b/c her tail gets stepped on, that is something else entirely. The risks would have to be weighed against the benefits. Continual trauma is not going to be good for her, but maybe it will get better if she cries when it gets stepped on by your other pup and the pup will be more careful or she will learn to get out of the way. I wouldn't be in a rush to do it, but if it is causing a major issue, then I don't think it's wrong to dock it... |
I would definitely NOT do anything to the tail at this age as it has grown a bit and has nerves, etc., and most vets would consider it an amputation now. She will learn to protect it with age and experience, and full tails are delightful! Dewclaws, if they are problematic might be dealt with at the time of spay, assuming you intend to spay her sometime like 6-10 months old; she will be much bigger then and more able to handle anesthesia. |
I would consider having the dew claws removed if they are giving her problems--possibly at the same time as a spay surgery? AT this point, it is too late to have her tail docked. |
