Or starting too soon depending on how you look at it. :D That study supports the 10, 14 and 18 week protocol. It also stresses the importance of waiting until your puppy is fully vaccinated to take him out. It explains the window of susceptibility, the period of time where the maternal antibodies from nursing are too weak to protect him, but still interfere with the effectiveness of vaccines. |

I never put much trust in what is recommended by drug manufacturers drug sellers or those who profit from the vaccinations in anyway. Stretching it out to 20 weeks is just a way of getting in one more vaccination. |
Thanks to everyone for all of the info & opinions. I'm leaning towards getting 20 wk DAPP shot next visit, just to be safe. The rabies shot will wait until 24 wks, probably along with the Heartworm testing as I found the following info on testing after the puppy has already started taking a preventive here: "Puppies under seven months of age can be started on heartworm preventives without first being tested. This is because it can take up to six and one half months after being bitten by infected mosquitoes before the dog will test positive. The puppy should be tested four to seven months after starting heartworm preventive to detect any infection acquired during the first few months of life." Thanks again! |
