Benson's On a Diet and I feel guilty When the vet saw Benson and he had his surgery they changed his diet to a Prescription diet and then put him on a diet to lose weight as well. He'd gotten up to 17 lbs. So they have me feeding himi 1/2 cup in the AM and 1/2 cup in the PM. He just keeps going to his bowl and looking at me like . . . where's my food? I feel so bad. I was horrible I know, I let him graze. This is tough. |
Don't worry! ;) Don't feel guilty--it's for his own good. However, I'm not a vet, but why is it necessary to feed a vet's prescription food simply to lose weight? You can find plenty of really good brands for weight-loss OR simply feed less. Jackson is a healthy 16lbs and only eats 1/2 cup of Acana Grasslands TOTAL in a day. If your pup is trying to lose weight and is 17lbs, 1 cup a day seems a bit much. (I used to think 1 cup a day was perfect for Jackson, but it ended up being just too much). I also mix a tad of wet food. Also, you can still 'free feed'. Just place a smaller measured amount in the bowl for him to graze on and once it's gone, it's gone. :) Of course I am not a vet and don't know any more info about your pup besides that he just needs to lose weight. |
That is pretty sad. Kaji got sick and the vet had me feeding him an 1/8 of a can of prescription diet. It was a tiny serving compared to his 1/4 cup he usually eats at every meal. He would stare at his bowl, come find me and paw at my leg/arm. I felt so bad that he was still hungry. :( |
I know it is so tough to put them on a diet. My Ted too is on a diet. I used to give him a 1/2 cup twice a day also of Natural Balance dry food. We've recently switched to Taste of the Wild, and he now only gets 1/4 cup and a couple pieces of veggie twice a day, and I do see a difference. His tummy will shrink; so hang in there until he gets used to his smaller amount. Apparently a cup is way too much for these little guys per day. Treats have also been cut down to two of the tiny Mother Hubbard buiscuits per day. Good luck. Soon our babies will be ready to sport their new summer bods. On the brighter side, the vet said Ted's extra weight was a good thing when he had to have a mass tumor removed from his nose because he wasn't so fragile. xo |
I think you should feel good about yourself for taking care of your pet. He can't do this for himself. Maybe start taking him to the park more, so even if he's hungry, he's having more fun. :) |

Thanks for the support. Its awful to watch him go over to his bowl and stare. We do walk daily, but its so gosh awful hot out here, its hard to do for very long. The temp was better today so we went on a longer walk, but it was awfully humid. |
I know the feeling. 2 of my 4 are overweight and one is at a good weight and my old male is underweight. I have been cutting their food back and they act like they are starving. I know it's for their own good but they don't. I feel guilty when I eat. lol |
I'm sorry Benson has bladder stones. Which prescription diet is he on? |
Benson's on Prescription u/d. His poor bladder was full of stones. Some quite large. His stones were calcium. |
Hang in there. It's hard at first, but you feel better when you start seeing results. Ted's still "hoping" for a hand-out...living with a Lab doesn't help. But he looks forward to his meals and is adjusting to life without extras. Good luck Benson!! |
Thanks. Its just hard when he has me wrapped around his little paw. I feel so guilty when he wines or goes over to his bowl and scratches around it looking for any little kibble that has hit the floor. The good news is he seems to like his new chow. good thing. |

Our guy is on a diet too. He was up to 9.5 lbs and he needed to lose a pound--to a pound and a half. Our vet said that instead of feeding him regular Innova we could switch to the low fat Innova. We used to feed him 1/2 a cup a day--1/4 in the morning and 1/4 at night. He suggested that we still feed 1/2 cup a day but split it so he has a portion in the morning, some in the afternoon and then at night. Also, I know that a lot of people have their Yorkies snack on veggies and fruits. Read to see which ones are safe for them. Green beans I heard were particularly filling so maybe that would work. I just want to add that carrots are very popular but I think you should shred them so that he can't choke on them. I snack all day and I hate feeling hungry so I feel so bad knowing that he may feel hungry too. Good luck, but remember that you are improving his health by taking the weight off. |
