Leftover wet food? Levi eats his dry kibble wonderfully - unless his schedule is disrupted. No problem, when we are traveling or visiting a friend, I mix about a tablespoon of wet food into his kibble, and he eats. No big deal. The problem is that I'm not quite sure what to do with the leftover wet food. Usually I'll put the unused portion into a plastic container, refrigerate it, use it as a mix-in throughout the day, and then toss it after dinner. But are there any guidelines for how to keep leftover wet food...as in, could it last for another day or two? He eats so little of it mixed into his dry kibble, it just seems wasteful to use 1/4 a can and toss the other 3/4. We use wet food pretty infrequently, so I'm not sure on the leftover protocol. :) |
I used leftover wet food in Spike's kong toy. I'll either fill it full of wet food, or put some kibble in it, and then put in the wet food to plug the opening. Then I'll freeze it. He loves it, and it keeps him busy trying to get all the food out. |
I read a very interesting piece in Quote:
'Bottom Line/ Natural Healing' magazine. There are some containers that are safe for storing food and then there are others that "release cancer-causing chemicals." It says that containers with the numbers 1 and 2 are the safest and 3,6 and 7 are the most dangerous (numbers are on the bottom of the containers). I threw out all of my containers that weren't safe and use the #1 & 2 for storing the wet food. It lasts me 3-4 days, but I usually don't use it the 4th day, (if there's any left over) just to be on the safe side, not because it has gone bad. I have two babies and one of them very picky, which means I still throw out food some times. You could portion it out in tiny containers and freeze what you won't be using until you need it, then just move it to the fridge for the next day's meal ;) |
I've used one can of food for 5 days. I keep it in the fridge as soon as I open the can. |
Thanks everyone. I just wanted to make sure it would be okay to refrigerate overnight and use the next couple of days. Hopefully Levi will be back on schedule with his regular kibble today...no more 4th of July travels! |
I keep Jackson's for 3-5 days in the fridge with a lid on the can! It works for us :) |
All leftover wet food here gets stored in glass pyrex containers. After three days it gets tossed. |
Canned food should be dumped after three days. You may be able to freeze the rest. It'd be worth asking the company... |
Glass, huh? Quote:

sounds safer to me for some reason  Yes, I'm afraid after the 3rd day and I just throw it out most of the time if there's little left. But I'm rethinking doing that again. I don't like storing it in the can, it feels weird to me. I figure if I don't eat anything stored in a can after a few hours, neither should my little ones...but that's just panicky-little-me :p |
