yorkie wont eat please help!!! i have a 10mth yorkie named bella i just got her 2 wks ago she is the sweetest thing ever. the only problem is that she dosn't want to eat i've tried everything! she wont eat the food she came with, i also bought her the royal canin, she ate for a day but that was it. she will eat her snacks that she loves but to much snacks are bad for her. i also bought her the nutrical paste and nothing she walked away.she only ate when i fed her from my hand she will not eat from the bowl. i guess the previous owners would give her house food so that's all she wants. also i gave her plain yogurt and she ate a little. i'm really worried another concern i have is that she sleeps all day she only gets up when we go the kitchen. is that normal for them to sleep all day? |
Hi! welcome to YT and congrats on your new yorkie! How much does your new baby weigh? if she's a good weight and healthy then i would stop giving her treats/yogurt/people food and only give her dog food. If she was only fed people food in the past then she might be holding out until you give her something "better" in her opinion then dog food. You can try scheduled feedings by putting her food down for 15 minutes morning, afternoon, and night and then picking it up even if she didn't eat anything. this will teach her meal times and she better eat now or she'll have to wait till later. Mine has food out all day long usually. she self regulates and only eats when she's hungry. However there are days when i need to get her to eat because she has to take a pill and i don't want to give it to her on an empty stomach. Or if i know she hasn't eaten in a day. In these situations i'll actually sit on the floor with her and play with her food. I try to make it seem like its a treat and a game. I'll pretend to eat a piece, or i'll even put some of my saliva on it (i actually lick it, LOL i dont care) to make her think its something yummy. Or i'll wave it around in front of her getting her to chase it then i'll toss it a few feet away. she thinks its a treat and will gobble it up. (i learned about the saliva trick from a breeder on here. for some reason it makes the food more appealing). you can try putting a topper on her dry food. try wet food of the same brand and mix it really well so she can't just eat the wet food and leave the dry. some people sprinkle Parmesan cheese on top of the food or shredded carrots. I use coconut chips (cocotherapy sold by a member here) or coconut oil (organic virgin) mixed in with dry food whenever i fill her bowl. |
having the same problem w my Feona w eating tried sprinkling the cheese n that really helped not sure for how long but i know what ur goin thru |
Oh, boy, have I been there and Quote:
still am some days (it's getting better, though). I had the same problem with Nini, so I started giving her people food---big mistake, HUGE! She got so sick, the vet put her on meds. and she couldn't eat for 48 hours (just a table spoon of ID food at meal times). Then, I was to start her on her food slowly. Well, she came out of it eating anything on sight until she got so chunky, the vet told me to 'stop it' in not so few words. Now Nini eats, no problem with her. Now, Nicky, different story . That putting the food out for 15, 20, 30 minutes game...he doesn't play that. If I try that trick, he'll make me suffer. He just won't eat, period (for a couple of days if I let it go that far ). What has worked for me with him is "Blue" dry food with wet food, mixed and variations of the wet. Plus I have to grind the dry, (pieces are too big for them) mixed with the wet and made into little meatballs. I'm not kidding, if I don't make little meatballs, Nicky will push the entire thing on the floor and not eat it. Sometimes, for some reason, he'll only eat if I play a game with him. The moral of my story? Though I got lots of wonderful advice here, from the vets, nurses, neighbors and everyone who wanted to help me, I had do a trial and error type of thing. It's frustrating and scary when we think our babies are starving themselves, I know, I was almost in tears most of the time. Just try different things slowly, like introducing a new food in small portions. Because if your baby gets a tummy ache from an abrupt food introduction, then your baby will be afraid to eat again :( that happen to me because of my NEED for them to eat. I hope you find what works for you soon :) |
Bella not eating!! :animal-paTHANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE ADVICE I WILL TRY MY BEST TO TAKE IT SLOW, ONE FOOD AT A TIME. HOPEFULLY I WILL FIND WHAT WORKS FOR HER. |
She is probably just adjusting to her new home, alot of yorkies are " picky", pick one food stay with it, personally I dont think royal canin is a good quality food but thats just me. What ever you decide to feed her , you can try a little parmisian cheese sprinkled on it, if that doesnt work try a little organic chicken broth to moisten it. If you havent taken her to the vet , you should make sure her teeth are okay :) .. Merricks has a good quality food that you can add warm water too that makes a nice gravy , she may like that and it also is in between soft and hard food. |
I mix Zeke's dry food with cottage cheese. When he was a puppy he used to like to have me throw his pieces of food on the floor one piece at a time. He would chase it, play with it, and then eat it. It is very important that your baby eat, no matter what it takes. Mine hardly ever slept until he got older, but each dog is different. |
We just got our dog Spike about 2 weeks ago. We had the same problem, until he happen to have an episode of hypoglycemia. FEED YOUR PUPPY no matter what it takes. Our puppy only weighs 1lb 2oz. When we took him to the vet (at 6am), he almost did not make it. To our surprise, he needed to be bed every 2 hours! Yikes, but we have managed to get food down. The vet recommended feeding him wet food because it contains more calories in small portions. If you have to force feed him do it gently with a feeding syringe. What ever it takes make sure he/she gets at least 70calories a day/per lb. Trust me, you don't want to spend the $700 for an emergency visit to the vet. We've learned our lesson. Hope this helps. The food that my puppy eat and seems to enjoy is Blue Buffalo wet food. |
Ooops that's *fed not bed. |

Hi there!! I have the same problem going on!! My lil prinses arrived at my place about 5 days ago. (She had travel time of 27houers flight) She is 10 months old and weighs 1.7kg's Well prinses Tilly doesnt seem to want to eat. She always had Royal Canine Junior twice a day with a apple for lunch (at previousowner). Ive tried that and Royal Canine Yorkie food) She still doesnt want to eat. She sometimes eat her "doggie cookies" sometimes not. :( I do not want to give her human food  Although Ive tried Tuna in oil over her dry food. And giving her veggies. She does eat, but barely 20grams a day!!! She also seem to sleep ALOT during the day. I am living in a really hot place as opposed rom where she came from was pretty cold. Can that make a difference? please help, Im stressed about my prinses O Ive already had her at two different vets and they seem to be thinking she is okay, exept or a small case of ringworm on her skin. But all in all, try the NutriCal. You don't want your puppy starving and have problems so soon like we had to go through. NOT FUN! |
