Twisted Nail on Dew Claw The nail on one of Capones' dew claw is twisted around like a spiral curl and I don't know if I should just leave it how it is or what. He bites it sometimes, but it doesn't seem to bother him unless I mess with it. Is it ok to just leave it how it is? Why do people remove the dew claws anyway? There isn't one on the other paw, I guess the breeder removed it and didn't remove the other one. |
I keep reading that if the dew claw removal isn't done properly, they grow back. My biggest concern is the dew claw getting caught on something and being torn off. I've seen some dewclaws literally hanging by a thread. I'm glad Kaji doesn't have them. |
Do you mean spiral like it's growing into like a macaroni shape? I've seen this happen to a customer's mini poodle. She didn't take too good care of her, and her nails were super long. Well one of the dewclaws had almost grown into a complete circle. Sometimes they can grow spiral back into the skin. If I'm understanding you correctly, the nail needs to be cut, but if it's that long, you will have it cut bit by bit, since the quick would have grown out long as well. |
Yes, you need to have it cut otherwise it grows in a circle and can grow back into the bad and injure your dog. Dewclaws are a nuisance as they can get snagged on things and get ripped off. Also, I think, harder to take care of as they grow quickly and can end up hurting the dog. |

My Sissy has just one dew claw. All her nails are very thick and will quickly grow rounded like an elbow macaroni. The dew claw is particularly a pain, as it is very difficult to get to and she certainly doesn't make it any easier!!!!!! |
Joey still has one dew claw also. I trim it up when I trim his nails. |
I keep it trimmed, but it's hard because I don't want to hurt him, it's not very long. Is it normal for it to grow like that? I tried to take a picture, but couldn't get a good one. Is he too old too have it completely removed? |
Since he is all grown, it would have to be a surgical procedure to have it removed. That could be painful. |
