Remedy For Leather Ear ;) I wanted to share a product that I have used. Many years ago one of my yorkies had gotten leather ear. I tried a product from my vet, but it didn't help. So there I was searching for a different product. Well I just had another yorkie with the same problem a few weeks ago. So once again I used this product and it worked again. It is called R7 Anti- Septic Spray. I just spray it on their ears 1- 2 x's a day and its all cleared up within less than 2 weeks. Let me tell you my little guy had it bad. Not anymore. :D |

It's some sort of condition where the dogs ear turns black or gets black spots, turns leathery, loses hair. I think mine have it  vet put them on antibiotics - 2 different kinds, helped a little but not really. I will def. look into this. |

It is a slimy black substance which causes hair loss on the ears, hocks, and the end of the tail. Some people think it is a fungus, while others think it's "rabbit mite". Either way it is not a pretty sight on your yorkie. It can be caused by cold weather or high humidity. Silky yorkies are more prone to it than soft coated yorkies. I do not shave their ears too much. I just scissor them. Only my show dogs get their ears shaved when their being shown. As I try to prevent this from happening. I also have found that if their is too much oil, creme on them. It makes their ears cold. Which prevents the air to gets to them, which I believe has caused my dogs leather ear. As far as conditioners go. I never put it on their ears. If some does by accident gets on them. I rinse it off thoughly.;) |
]Here is a link that shows what leather ear looks like. Hope this helps!! Alex's Yorkie Care Frequently Asked Questions. Page 3. Great picture to explain what it looks like. After I posted this I wished I had taken a picture of how my yorkie looked, but he's all cleared up now. On the other hand his ears looked horrible. I don't think I wanted a picture of him looking like that. LOL He's too cute.:) |
Wow thanks everyone I didn't know that existed! |
I cleared one of my fosters using 50/50 water/vinegar. I applied it with a cotton ball 3 - 4 times weekly. Worked really well! |

Do yorkies normally lose hair on their nose and ears as they get older? Or should I be treating her for this? |
Wipe the ear with alcohol wipes...and apply 2% Lotromin. Another tried and true method is a cotton ball saturated with bleach.....wipe it onto the ear on both sides. |
It is so cold here that we get it a lot. Thanks for the info |
