Bully stick smell??? Hi all, are bully sticks supposed to smell real bad? It's a very strong odor, almost leaning towards rotten! It only smells like that where she has chewed it. I took it away from her and am prepared to throw it in the trash if the smell means it's bad. What do you think? Thanks |
Some bully sticks smell worse than other, I've heard that Red Barn smells the worse, and the dog doesn't even have to be chewing on it and it will fill the whole room with "fragrance". I've heard some brands don't have ANY odor, but others have said, yes they do, so I don't know why some people say no and others say yes for the same brand. I think Merrick brand has a mild odor, but it's worth it to me, because I know the hard sticks are so good for the teeth and gums. I preferred the kind that's made in the US, I do think they have stricter regulations, and also I don't want any artificial preservatives or expiration dates. Free range doesn't mean anything if the beef is imported. |
I've also read that sometimes a supplier gets a bad batch when normally their kind won't smell. nancy, i did get one 12" merrick bully and it smelled really bad. Do you get the smaller ones? I've still found merrick wishbones are the most consistent with not smelling, but some dogs can go through those pretty fast. katie would finish one in an evening or two, whereas Uni it takes her months sometimes. |

Yeah, when i first started giving them to Uni, she would growl at whoever got near her, they turned her into a bully! So I was holding it for her as to train her out of the growling, that's when i noticed the smell (another brand). Those were very thin though, and about 6 or 8" long. I was near gagging. I did not reorder those. :( |
The only ones I've ever found that didn't smell came from Westbrookdog.com. She's also on YT, but I don't remember she screen name right off the top of my head. |
Ok thanks. It's the Petco brand and very smelly! I will let her have it back just not while beside me! lol |
Smell or no smell I just don't see how you can give them to your dogs...knowing what they are and all...yuk! :tongue4: |
Part of the reason why I recommend Merrick wishbones.. They are the achilles tendon from a cow, not the penis. Anyway, they are a 100% digestable chew that's why many of us give them. Satisfies their need to chew, and "babysits" them for a while. |

I have been wondering about the wishbones too. I've seen them in stores, but have been hesitant to buy them because I didn't know much about them. As far as the bully sticks go, I have bought far too many "smelly" ones from pet stores/chain. The ones I buy for Levi now come from a local pet boutique and THANKFULLY do not smell atrocious...and he enjoys them just as much as the stinky ones. |

I was doing a good job with uni's teeth brushing and using the petzlife as you recommended, but started getting really lazy. I've just started using the spray again, but still not brushing. :( Bad mommy! :thumbdown She's got some yellowing, but between her one side of double canines she has tartar. |

I have been pretty happy with the bullys I have ordered. Every now and then I get a stinky one, but for the most part my supplier has been very good. In my case the 12 inch and 6 inch are the same, it is the jumbos that smell as well has any of the twists or braids. However, they are still not as bad as the ones I have bought at Petco & Petsmart. |
I get the merrick ones and while they do smell it is not as bad as ones I have bought off of ebay |
