Delta Society no longer allows raw diets Delta Society - Raw Protein Diet Policy Thought I'd pass this link along to any of you doing or interested in pursuing therapy dog status with your dogs. The Delta Society, one of the groups that certify for such visits, recently passed a new rule saying dogs in the program cannot be on raw diets. It evidently created quite a stir among members who feed raw, and no doubt some will quit because of it. The above link explains why they did it. |
Mike, this has actually been a super interesting topic that has caused a lot of fall-out. It turns out that the woman on Delta who spear-headed the anti-raw campaign is...um...involved in the kibble industry...is it Purina? I can't recall exactly, as her info came out about a month ago or so -- but her reasons for wanting to ban raw were revealed to be extremely dubious (political). VERY interesting!!! :) |
That is interesting, Ann. I'll have to Google around. If that were the case, it would be pretty ignorant of Delta Society to invite the perception that this is politically motivated. Wow, you're right (as usual!). Purina is a major donor to the Delta Society, and one of its board members is a Purina executive. |
That's awful! I wanted to train Kasha to be a therapy dog. But I wont give up raw. There's always someone to ruin things for others just to put a few $$ in the bank. |
There are other organizations that certify therapy dogs. I'm not sure which ones are the largest, but I know of Therapy Dogs United and Therapy Dogs International. |

Cindy (livingdusgmops) had some really good links about this issue/subject. It just shocked the heck out of me. I was so surprised that the executive is/was able to push this through, given her potential for bias. |
Well, I agree with the decision to not let anything that was exposed to raw meat (in this case face fur, etc.) around immunocompromised people. But I do have one little question for the Delta Society. What about kibble? Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Dry Dog Food - Health News | Current Health News | Medical News - FOXNews.com lol, I don't get it. Sounds like a double standard to me... |

This is interesting. I have been researching therapy dog status and settled on Delta Society as a way to pursue this. (I want to use Kaji to help kids learn how to read) You would think that a society such as this would put politics aside and go forth to help people. I guess no one is immune to the great almighty $$$$. |
I wish someone would fund a definitive study to at least help clarify the debate a little better so people could make an educated choice. One of the links on the site I referred to in the beginning mentions similar dangers with "live" treats, i.e. bully sticks and pig's ears. Why didn't Delta Society ban those as well? Because Purina sells those items? There's no way of knowing, but the appearance is not good. |
