Opened wet food life Can anyone tell me the average life of an opened can of wet food. Bridget likes a little wet food in the morning - but eats such a small amount an average size can would last her a week - although I know it can't. What is the "refrigerated life" of wet food once opened and am I correct to assume it would be stored out of the can itself? AND.....how long should I let it sit if she doesn't eat it right away....(now I know why I liked her on dry kibble only). I've tried to do a search, but can't seem to find what I'm looking for. Thanks in advance! |
I also mix in wet food with Jackson's meals and buy the small cans usually. I don't mix a whole lot of wet food so a can could also last us a week or more sometimes. But what I do is just put a lid on it (we purchased one at the Dollar Store specifically to put on cans) and keep it in the fridge. I will usually keep it 3 days and then throw away whatever was not used. Also, I know they're not healthy but sometimes once or twice a week I buy those "Mixables" from Petsmart or Petco and they're like .75 cents for a little bag and it's soo easy to mix right in and then you throw it away! |
It should be kept no longer than three days. The lids are available, so I assume keeping it in the can is fine. I'd most definitely transfer it to something else personally. |
I buy the glass pyrex containers that I use only for dog food. I transfer it from the can into the glass container and will keep it in the fridge for three days. I give about a tablespoon per dog per meal to mix with their kibble so I usually go through a whole can in that time but if for some reason I don't, it gets dumped. Many companies make small cans... I know Wellness, Natural Balance, and HALO all do, if you want to go that route. |
Thanks everyone....I thought 3 days was about right, but wanted to be sure. You guys are awesome!!:yorkietal |
Three days is what the pet store told me. |
I keep mine 3 days. But with 4 of them eating it it doesn't usually last more than 2. I use one of those plastic lids. |
I don't know, because I've never done it. I was wondering if you could freeze half of it in a baggie? |
I bought these trays Walmart.com: Fresh Baby - So Easy Storage Trays for Baby Food and Breast Milk: Feeding and when I open a can, I just put it in here then freeze it. After a day I put the cubes in freezer baggies. I get 24 cubes out of each can, and usually have enough left over for 2 meals. I was sick of wasting all the food that was left over after 3 days, so I got these. It works great for us, and I keep a couple different flavors in the freezer so they don't get sick of the same thing :) Oh, they are bpa free too! |
