1 yr old Yorkie won't eat!! Hi everyone! My little girl is about 5lbs and is an extremely picky eater and does not like to eat her kibble. I feed her Merrick's and soak it in water (she loves soft food). She refuses to touch it! I hand feed her a few pieces and she will eat a maximum of 8-10 wet kibble. I also mix in canned food and that sometimes entices her.. but recently, she doesn't want to eat that either. Last night, I served her Merricks THANKSGIVING DINNER canned food with a few pieces of boiled chicken breast shreds and she ate it all up. This morning i tried the kibble again and as expected, she turned her nose and walked away. I don't want to feed her only canned food. What do you feed yours? I don't want her to starve, throw up yellow bile, lose energy, and fall ill. Any suggestions on brands, tricks.. anything???? :animal36 |
maybe you should feed her boiled chicken and rice for a few days is she retaining in baby teeth her little mouth might hurt if she is look in her mouth and see if you see what looks like a double row of teeth if you see that then ide say thats your issue |
My "expert" opinion I am 3 days into my very first yorkie. He is 5 months old and a timid boy. He is only 2.5 lbs. and the breeder had been feeding him table food! I found this alarming... I don't know much, but I know this little guy needs nutrition. I was worried about hypoglcemia, but I am also worried he won't be healthy without getting what he needs. What I found works for him is staying with him when he eats. He also has separtation anxiety and he gets too worried to eat or drink when I walk away. So I stood there this morning, and he ate about a tablespoon of dry puppy food this morning and another tablespoon this afternoon. He drinks his water better too. I have not give him any table food at all, and he did get hungry. I did free feed the first day, but he ate about 2 tiny bites. Even when I mixed him some fancy meaty dog food, he ate hardly anything. common sense told me he would continue to be pickymif I free fed him, so I stopped that. So, here I am, feeling like quite the pro because I got lucky with Dinky! He's eating nicely now, crunching right into those tiny pellets. It feels good to see him eat with some gusto! I am really enjoying this little guy. He's up from his latest nap now! He has a trip to the vet today in about an hour. Going bye bye in the car! what fun. He is nowhere near potty trained. He goes in his crate and on his blanket, and he thinks that this is correct! So that is going to be quite a challenge. |
My 14 month old is the same way. Some days he eats everything, but most days he just picks at his food. I give him 1/4 cup in the morning & 1/4 for supper but he hardly ever eats all of it. He also weighs 5 pounds. He has been like this since 7 months of age. It does get annoying, & I try coaxing him to eat but it doesn't help. Now I just figure he will eat if he's hungry & I don't give too many treats. |
Same Problem Our 1 year old Yorkie is just the same. Its so frustrating as he seems to get excited when its dinner time but then just turns his nose up when you put it on the ground. We leave it down all day to try and get him to eat it but some days he won't go near it. Other days he'll eat quite a bit. I really don't know what to do! |
Hi I have a 1 year old Yorkie that stopped eating as she did one week ago, my vet told me that the weather is most likely to blame since we have a heat stroke for about a week now in Greece. I started giving her Salmon oil yesterday which my vet thinks is a good idea and I will let you know if I see any results in the following days Maria |
I did wonder if the weather had anything to do with it as its really hot here just now too. Interested to see how you get on. |
Results Hi again, the weather is getting better and I have given Salmon oil for two days now, I already see results, I don't know if it's the weather or the Salmon oil but my Jean is eating and her energy is coming back, So something worked Maria |
I'm glad I'm not the only one with a finicky eater! My baby is just 11 weeks old. The breeder had him eating a wet brand from the grocery store that I don't feel is good enough so I slowly switched him to Wellness. At first he ate with gusto and now he refuses to eat it. I have been mixing kibble and canned. Yesterday he started to eat my German Shepherd's dry food. Now today he is not interested in that either! He acts fine. He's playful and healthy. Should I switch brands on him again? I don't want his stomach to get upset. |
A friend of mine has a beagle that never really liked the foods he has tried. She just picked at it. We love Nature's Variety and have had great luck with it. After talking to him, he tried Nature's Variety Venison and Millet formula and the dog loves it and gobbles it right up. Maybe try a small bag of something else completely different to see what happens. |
my yorkie refuses to eat, even human food my 4 year old 4lb. yorkie, Sammie, has always been a picky eater, but she's taken it to the extreme these past few months. oh, where to begin!! for starters, she absolutely refuses to eat dry food-- we've tried all sorts of gourmet brands including chefs creations and ended up wasting a heap of money on untouched bags of food that other dogs would go crazy for. for the past year, we've been feeding soft dog food.. mainly sticking to 1/4 cup of Beneful supper (roasted chicken recipe or beef stew.. is this stuff any good for yorkies? i'm beginning to doubt sammie's vet) for breakfast and dinner, all cut up into little bite sized pieces with fresh ingredients like steamed celery or bokchoy or chopped chick peas mixed in... occasionally a grating of parmasean or tiny dices of steak. We'd never fed her table food until we became seriously concerned that she would fall sick from malnutrition.. and even still, we only give her unseasoned and ungreasy things like pasta, rice, steamed fish, and tiny bits of apples or melons or other safe fruits. the main problem now is that Sammie never eats something twice . She will devour a bowlful of salmon one night and turn her nose away from it the next morning! she won't even have it the next week. i tried varrying things up by feeding her on a cycle (salmon with peas mondays, boiled chicken with greens tuesdays...etc), but once she's had something, never again . the only food she's eaten more than once to the best of my memory was chickpeas.. and she never goes near them anymore. Alas, we're gotten into the habit of constantly changing things up for her, adding herbs to the fish the next day, steamed rice the next, and before we know it-- the food is more complex to prepare than my family's meal. We're running out of ingredients! at this rate, she'll stop eating altogether really soon.. The issue isn't so much that it's time consuming and costly, but that we're not even sure if feeding her this way is the right thing to do. if the family is busy one week (i go to school out of state) and are unable to prepare her food in advance, she'll just starve and lay on the carpet all day! :sickie: we'd ultimately love for her to start eating dog food again, but that's too ambitious for now. has anybody experienced similar concerns with their yorkie? We desperately want to get Sammie on a stable diet! Please help me find a solution. |
Hi everybody, I have a picky eater too. She is 1 and a half year now and she has been picky since day one. I was always very concerned with her diet. I tried everything. I've posted a thread about vomiting during our vacation. During that incident I had to keep her for one day with no food and then for about a week gradually introducing to her food again. It seems that worked like never before because she was so hungry that she would eat anything after that week. Now after about two weeks of that incident I put her a bowl of food three times a day (morning afternoon and night) and she eats her kibble just fine. Off course now she is old enough and I'm not afraid that she will have any trouble because she doesn't eat. Any way I found out that she has become a picky eater because of me. Since I was feeding her chicken of wet food or can food or all the other things that I'm sure everybody here have tried because I was afraid that she was too young. If you are confident about her health condition let her starve for a day or two and then she will eat whatever you want Maria |
Hi everyone! I need your help!!! I have a very very picky eater too. I need some different ideals on dishes for chicken, beef, bacon and treats. that is the only thing that daisy eats in her bowl and some time she wont touch that either. She barks and barks for my food. if its off of my plate she will eat it from my hands. I have tried all kinds of dog food. She refuses to touch it! Petsmart employees told me to try different kinds of food each time i went there. They were just making lots of money off me. its just a job for them. I gave up on that food. Most of the time I hand feed her because im afraid that is going to get sick from not eating. Because when im at work she doesn't eat all day. What can i do? Jackie |
hi; if she likes the canned food; then feed her that. there's nothing wrong with feeding wet food only; if that's what she wants to eat then at least she will eat that. its better than not eating anything. also i believe they prefer wet because it's easily digested and more hydrated. the dry food is harder to digest and very dry; so they will need to drink more water to get hydrated. my dog was getting dehydrated very often; i don't feed any more dry food at all. also you can use solid gold green tripe to entice the apetite; just use about a teaspoon. good luck. |
Ziva is not much of an eater either. If we didn't have the big dog waiting to gobble her food I don't think she would eat some days. I know that she will hold out for something better, so I try not to concern myself so much, if she doesn't eat at lunch she is always hungry for dinner as long as she hasn't had any treats or chewies...She does like people food so I mix a bit of freshly steamed chicken or beef(I keep little frozen patties in the freezer and cook one up while I'm making dinner) and smashed green beans with a very small kibble (solid gold wee bits) sometimes a bit of cottage cheese- so she can't pick it apart, she usually eats that quite well, and it seems better, ingredient wise, than wet food. |
I have an extremely picky eater, a 14 year old Maltese. All of your stories sound so familiar, it is so frustrating dealing with a picky eater. Six months ago, I started feeding her Nature's Variety raw, and she wolfs it down! Not once in 6 months has she turned her nose up at it, and she begs for it. She eats it immediately. I wish I had found raw food sooner. |
Pinicky Eater Thank goodness that I am not the only one gavubg this frustrating problem. I have a 4 month old and I guess I spoiled it too much that now I am having a problem letting him eat his regular dry food. It started when he came to Canada from AK, USA. He had diarrhea and was prescribed canned food which he totally loved. He was also able to taste cat food and from that time on ward he doesn't want to eat dry food but canned food. Wasnting my puppy to eat dry food as well I would mix 1 tablespoon of canned food with the dry food and he would eat it. But he get tired of it so being the worrying type I would buy other canned food as he has grown not to eat the ones I bought. He would eat this flavor for a day and tomorrow won;t eat it anymore wanting a new change in taste. Tried Nature Varitety's raw food which he totally doesn't like, Evo, Innova, Merrick, Nature's Homestyle, Instinct. Most of the good premium food I have tried. I dont knwo what to do. SHould I be firm and take out his food if he doesn't want to eat knowing that he will eat when he gets hungry with or without canned food. I am at a loss. Hoping to get your suggestion. Ally recommended Solud Gold Tripe but the food is not available in Canada. I bought a Tripet Tripe do give today. I am not sure if he will eat it. Luckily the pet store I go to dies exchanges on food opened. Would I need a supplement? |

the sundancer grain free food from solid gold is great for picky eaters, chester has done great on it |
For our Bella, I have to mix in 1/2 teaspoon of cottage cheese or yorgurt in with her kibble........she eats it up. |
Well I have a 14 month old and I had the same problem. Turns out, I was the problem! If she didnt eat right away I would RUN to try something else. Five different dog foods, boiled chicken, wellness wet, fresh pet, carrots, romain lettuce, yogurt, cottage cheese, fresh turkey..you name it. She even stopped drinking water out of a bowl so I ended up mixing her daily water needs into her food to make a gravy! She had me good.. Anyway, I was giving her alot of veggie treats and occ bully stick during the day thinking I was quite the nutritional food expert. What I ended up giving her was diarreah! Thanks to a great yorkie mom I stopped all that, gave her only boiled chicken and pumpkin for 5 days got rid of the diareah and started fresh. NO more treats during the day, none. I started her back on her royal canin calm kibble, put in some boiled chicken and put it down..She was starving so she ate all! I now only give her her kibble with chicken or a few bits of steak or turkey on it. Occasionally I give her a teaspoon of cottage cheese with her dry kibble. Thats it! Her treats are the same as her food. Bits of chicken or turkey or cottage cheese. NOTHING else. She now drinks water out of her bowl. I think we rush to make sure they are okay so they get us turned inside out giving them anything or everything. It actually works against us. Keep some nutrical on hand for the really stubborn ones (you can rub it on their gums if they refuse to lick it)and hopefully they will come around.. |
