I'm really hesistant on spaying my furbaby. She is 5 months old and will be going +++ for pre-op tomorrow. I don't know if I trust my vet completely. I've seen him a few times, but I usually see big dogs as his clients. Only once did I see a small dog like mine. Also, he said it was up to me when I wanted to spay her whether it was before or after first heat. He mentioned how some people thought saying after first heat gave their dog a nicer coat. I'm very hesistant. I really don't know what to expect. She is my first dog ever. |
If you don't trust him completely, please get to know him better or find a different vet. Have you asked the questions from the anesthesia sticky? I wouldn't worry that he sees a lot of big dogs. They can do just fine seeing both. And some vets don't push early spay/neuter. They leave it up to their clients. It's all in how he does the surgery/anesthesia and how he treats you and your pup. |
If your not happy with your vet you should maybe find another one. I feel its as important to trust your vet as you would your own doctor. Also spaying them before there first heat is better for them because it lessens there risk for certain cancers and you dont have to worry about any accidental pregnancies. |
Always listen to your gut. If you don't feel comfortable than DON't do it!! I did not get Pixie spayed until 8 months and she did not have a heat before that. I really think that you need to trust your vet when your precious baby is going under. Ask lots of questions and if you don't have peace about it find another doctor. Good luck and remember your baby can't make the decisions so you need to make sure that you make the right ones for her. |
No one can tell you what to do. Some questions to ask him Has he done spay/neuters on small animals before? Is he going to follow the preferred anesthesia protocol? Have you talked to him and asked questions about the process of your babies' spay? What is he looking for on the pre-op blood work? etc etc. The more informed you are about the procedure and the more he can answer your questions, the more at ease you will be. Only you can decide if you are truly comfortable enough with him to have him do the procedure. Don't be afraid to ask him questions, that might alleviate some of your fears. There are questions to ask in the stickys in this forum :) PS, I agree, in the end, trust your instincts |
If you are not comfortable with your vet I would find one you are comfortable with. Go with your gut. |
It is a nervous time for mom and pup with the most trusted vet. I would definitely need to have a good vibe with my vet. |
