I doubt it. I am sure it was a misunderstanding.

Plus, another person gave the wrong dose.

Just my observations and concerns.

I wish people would simply call their vets for dosages. I know..wishful thinking.

I called my vet first! Then if in doubt get a second professional opinion. (Call a second vet just to verify).

Which Benadryl is the correct one -- children's allergy? -- and is there one that does not have flavoring? I read in another thread that the flavoring is the same toxic substance that is found in chewing gum.

I have been looking at all the stores and can only find "dye free," but not a flavor free.

i always double and triple check meds - pharmacist, manufacturer and vet

I had a vet tech put the label on dd soloxine at 1 tablet twice a day - uh hello she is on 1/3 of that tablet twice a day so they make mistakes too so you can never be too careful on meds.

good thing ladymom and I had dogs that were on this med prior as we knew better but what about the pet owners giving for the first time that do not?

I have used the pill form and I do not use generic of any drugs if i can avoid it too as problems come from generic drugs as they are not regulated as closely as name brand drug companies

you need to avoid any xylitol - what is wild is some vet dental products have this in them too so be careful of those as well

Do you use the adult or children's pill? I think the children's pills have flavoring too.

How do you cut it to get the correct dosage? I believe I read to use the caplet because other forms if cut affect the tongue and mouth. :confused:

For people who use the liquid, is it the flavored variety - cherry or grape? The ingredients list only states "flavoring" so I don't know what exactly that is.

I don't have an immediate need for the Benadryl -- just want it in my first aid kit.

We use Children's cherry liquid.
It is not dye free and it does contain sorbitol (but always check first).
Sorbitol is generally considered safe:
ASPCA | Sorbitol

Actually, we usually get the generic.

i have used the 25mg adult tablets and cut them with a pill cutter or cuticle clipper if i need to get it down smaller. I have used it for dex and dee dee but can no longer use for dd as she gets too amped up on her and dex i only did for a short period of time after his hospital stay when he was itching like crazy on ultra zd so we could not feed that food any longer.

For allergies I have heard zyrtec works much better though

Weird. I didn't get any notifications that I had more replies. Sorry about that. Thank you for the reply. I assumed that equivalence. As a trial I only gave her 1.5 mL because giving her more scares me. It didn't make her sleepy. But it didn't make her hyper either, which is good. :)

I don't use generics either. In Mexico, they have generics for the generics. LOL! The doctor I worked with said those were completely useless and most didn't even contain medication. They are not regulated at all. I think some parties are trying to pass laws to make it be regulated.

The only one I could find over here doesn't taste like anything. I tasted a bit and it is not a good flavor. But what I do is put it on a spoon and then add little pieces of ham to the mixture. Itzel then tries to get to the ham and ends up drinking her medication as well. I guess it helps masks the flavor. I'm sure she doesn't mind the taste too much because even with ham, if it tasted horrible, she wouldn't drink it. I can't squirt the medication into her mouth with a syringe. If you do that to her, she completely freaks out. I think it's because when she was a puppy, I had her on Metronidazol and I had to give it to her through a syringe. I've never taken that drug, but I heard it tastes awful. So I don't blame my poor baby for being traumatized against having medication like that. :)

I read this same article a few days ago. :) I don't think they have generic over here in Mexico. And I wouldn't really trust it too much here. In the States, I would, but not here. They have generics for the generics over here that a doctor said are very shady.

Thanks for the information. I really freak out giving my baby any kind of medications. I always second guess her vet. :) I like to be informed. I think people should always be informed about their doggie's healthcare and their own as well. Plus, it just gives me more information to have on hand should I ever need it. I'm starting to think I should have gone to veterinary school instead. :)

yeah one of my clients works with companies abroad to get fda approval in us for their products and she warned me about this and another client of mine switched her thyroid med she was on for years to a generic form as her insurance switch would only cover the generic not name brand and she ended up in the hospital really sick. She narrowed it down to the only change was that medication. She told me she paid out of pocket and went back on the non-generic thyroid med and never had a problem since. She was glad that drug is cheap as she pays for it outside of her insurance since they only cover generics :(

My client that works on fda approval consults told me all the probs are in generics as not enough man power to regulate the little guys only the big guys with the big money like pfizer. This is why you see fda warnings on the bigger companies usually.
