How Many Times a Day Should I Feed Him? I know that everyone seems to disagree on what food is best for little baby Yorkies, but I was thinking and I came up with what I think is a pretty important question: How many times a day should I be feeding Stewie? He's 16 weeks. The breedr was feeding him Eukanuba, so I bought some and plan to switch slowly eventually, after I've done some more research. I feed him in the morning before I go to work (dry and chicken with gravy) and when I get home. When we leave for the day (5 hours or so at most) I leave a little dry food in his crate with him. He gets trainer treats whenever he goes on his pee pad and has another milk-type bone after he has his yucky tasting medicine. He never finishes his food in the morning or in the evening, but definitely eats what I perceive to be "enough"... maybe I am just giving him too much at a time. Or maybe I should feed him more often... :confused: |
How much does he weigh. My little one is 2 1/2 lbs and I just free feed her. She is 11 mos. and is really good at not overeating. When she was 4 mos. I always had food out, and made sure she was eating every 3 hours, but she was also 1 lb. 9 oz at the time. I think it is a good idea to just free feed him until he is at least 6 mos. It also depends on how big he is. If he is a bigger yorkie than 5 hours may be okay, but I think at 4 mos. 5 hours is too long of a time period for any size. I would make sure he is at least nibbling ever 3 hours. |
Hi Kristy, I just tell people to keep food available at all times.....dry food. If your dog doesnt have weight problem then offer treat food.....canned two to three times a day as your schedule permits. Sounds like your are doing a wonderful job with feeding. I tend to overfeed because I like my dogs to have a bit of extra weight due to breeding. I feed eukanuba, and I know there has been some controversy over it, but Its hard for me to change right now because it has been just an exceptional dogfood for my yorkies. But I do switch between less expensive dry food at times because they just get sick of the same stuff all the time, I dont care how good it is. My treat food usually is pedigree (traditonal ground not chunky style) Its affordable and my yorkies love it!!! Pedigree chunky they hate it?????????? DOnt know why. Its affordable for me. Im also a leftover queen.....chicken, ribmeat, hamburger. My yorkies just have always grown up with this and do not have senitive stomachs for the most part. I sure I will get the exception to the rule eventually! |

Stewie weighed in at the vet on Saturday at about 3 pounds. He has a an upper respitory infection that he is taking liquid medicine (from a dropper) for, as well as some antibiotics for his skin & cough. I know I am being an overly nervous mommy, but I don't want his blood sugar to go haywire, as I know it is common among Yorkies and other toy dogs. |
Gracie's eating habits vary from day to day. Some days she wolfs down 3 meals and snacks, but today, for example, I had to practically force feed her some lunch because she hadn't eaten since last night! She's very lethargic and laid back today, but she's had days like this before and the next day she's jumping and running and having fun! But she's become quite a picky eater. Doesn't like the Wellness food I bought her! So I'm not sure what I will feed her now! |
Hypoglycemia ( low blood sugar) is more of a problem then diabetes is for a yorkie. He is a puppy and overfeeding would be much better then underfeeding. If he is eating, not sluggish, good solid stool, urine not amber I wouldnt worry. My dogs never finish their food.... you feed alot, very plentiful healthy foods. He is a small dog and I would bet hes just getting to much. Not a bad thing.......I do the same thing........its just he always has food......so it will never be finished......LOL. Not to worry he is a puppy and I do not believe in limiting a puppies food unless advised by a vet for a disease process...etc |
Thanks for the advice. I think I am going to keep him at 2x a day with the dry food out for him while I'm at work. |
