Raw Hide Bones Trixie is 6 months old tomorrow and I was wondering if she would be able to have a small rawhide bone....I read that they were not okay for young puppies and just want to know if she will ever be able to have them or are they not okay for Yorkies. Thanks. :animal-pa |
Raw hide isn't digestable by any dog breed. I'd give her a bully stick or raw beef bone instead. |
I had 2 dogs when i was growing up and both ate raw hide bones and we never had an issue. Winnie will have her occassional raw hide bone because she considers them a treat for some reason. Otherwise, she has her bully sticks and hymilayan treats (sp?). |
I wouldnt give your dog raw hide. Try "better then ears". Hannah loves these! |
Usually that raw hide becomes a long nasty slick rope that is sometimes hard for them to swallow and it doesn't really digest. I have had a couple of scares with them, so now I am looking for a good source of raws bones. |
Sophie Kate does not get rawhide. I learned the hard way when she was about 8 months old she had her first and only rawhide, the poor thing was sick for a week and I ended up spending about $400.00 on Vet charges. We have a simple rule with, she only can chew on her Nyla bones and baby carrots - nothing else. |
where can you find Bully sticks? I have always used rawhides never had a problem. only the big flat ones and i take them away when they get small. but whould like to try bull sticks instead, if they are safer for my babies. |

Thanks for the responses....I will be tossing the rawhides in the trash. Trixie tried the bully sticks a few times and they seemed to give her loose poops...she really liked them though. They were the bully sticks from Merrick. I will have to look for a new "bone" type treat for her....she does have her nylabone for puppies so that is good for now. :animal-pa |
I made the mistake of giving Ruby a raw hide and found a bloody mucousy (sp?) poop on her wee-wee pad. It really scared me, I started thinking she had these terrible things wrong with her, but she had no other symptoms. then it dawned on me, it was the raw hide. So I threw them out and was looking for things for her. she won't chew the nylabone things, so I tried the baby carrot. She loved it. Great suggestion. And i always have baby carrots -- we all love snacking those! My husband suggested we get a food dehydraytor and maybe dry out some chicken or beef for her -- do you think that is a good idea?? We would make it bland, of course -- no spices. |
