Pre-op Bloodwork for Spay Lasts for 1 year?!? i called the vet's office to make an appointment to have bijou spayed and i asked about the pre-op bloodwork. of course it is optional (not surprised), but it was nearly as much as the spay itself!! i inquired whether i could get it a day in advance somewhere else at a lower cost and he said yes. i asked if 24 hours was too far in advance and he said no. then he said that the bloodwork lasts for up to a year! this doesn't make sense to me ... if the bloodwork is "pre-op" why would it last for a year? i asked him if he was sure and he seemed so certain, but i'm still not sure.... what are your thoughts?!? |
My vet wants it repeated if longer than a month has gone by... |
A year sounds too long to me. A week at most because you would want to know the current state of the pup before undergoing anesthesia. Far too many things could happen in a year to even remotely consider that good practice. My only concern with it being done somewhere else the day before, is if it would be back and to your vet in time for the surgery. |
My vet says 30 days is the limit for pre-op blood work. I agree, a year does seem too long. |
The vet probably said that because a good number of them don't think it's necessary at all for young dogs. So yearly bloodwork would be considered more than enough by them. I don't think there is a time limit on blood work because every vet and owner is comfortable with different things. Things can change from day to day. Infections can develop, etc. So IMO, a year is way too long. |
I have to agree. One year, is too long for the blood test results to be current with any animal. I asked our vet about what the pre op blood work was for and what are they checking. I was told it is to check kidney, liver and other functions prior to surgery. If there is anything that is NOT normal it could be too risky to go under anesthesia. That makes sense to me. I have seen what happens with my kitties that I have lost to kidney failure and how it can come on suddenly without symptoms. All of my kitties are rescues and I had blood work done when I took each of them in to be vet checked, vaccines, etc. and spayed or neutered. I am sure the blood work also was done to determine kidney and liver function at that time. I recognize these tests are optional, but why opt NOT to have blood work done. After all, if it were our child or ourselves getting ready to have surgery, pre op blood work is also done. |
When my Bijou (Love your baby's name by the way :D) was spayed a few months ago my vet said no longer than 3 month old blood work. Bijou had surgery in October for a broken leg and she wouldn't use the blood work from just 5 months before. So a year is a long time to my vet anyway. |
i'll definitely be getting the bloodwork done. she had it for her dental earlier this month, but i'll probably get it done again before her spay anyway. i just feel 1 year is too long and i don't think they should be telling people that. i'm going to let the vet know as well. thanks for your feedback!! |
